This weekend, we welcomed our founding learners.

We planted our studio tree, left tiny handprints behind, and celebrated the beginning of something we’ve dreamed about for years.

Tomorrow, the doors officially open.

The shelves won’t stay perfectly organized. The materials will get used. Friendships will begin. Questions will be asked. Mistakes will be made. And this little studio will finally become theirs.

Here we go!

Hard things aren't obstacles to learning at Acton.

They are the learning.

Conflict resolution, difficult Quests, goals that don't get met, feedback that stings, a slow hour at the Business Fair.
Every hard moment is practice for a life that will have hard moments.
We're not raising children who've been protected from difficulty. We're raising people who know what to do when it comes.

For three years, this school has existed mostly in our heads, our notebooks, our conversations, and a very long list of things to build.
Now the shelves are full.
The books are waiting.
The Montessori materials are ready to be used.
The Socratic questions are written.
And very soon, our first learners will walk through the doors.
We’ve spent so much time building Acton Academy Lake Oswego.
Next week, it becomes their school.
And we can’t wait!

"Character determines destiny." It's easy to nod at, and easy to treat as something that just happens to a child.

Acton's founding philosophy says the opposite: character is built, and it's built in a specific order.

Clear thinking leads to good decisions.
Good decisions, repeated, become the right habits.
Habits forge character.
And character (not talent, not test scores) is what shapes the life a child eventually lives.

That's why we don't treat character as an assembly, a poster, or a once-a-week lesson.

It's forged in the ordinary moments of a self-governed day: the choice to keep a promise, to try again after failing, to serve someone else, to tell the truth when a lie would be easier.

Give a child real choices with real consequences, and you give them the raw material of a good life.

School should prepare kids for more than a test.

Cooking. Budgeting. Fixing things. Growing food. Starting a business. Caring for a space. Working with others. Solving real problems.

We want learners to practice the kinds of skills that help them become capable, confident humans in the real world.

What’s one life skill you wish you’d learned in school? 👇

"The main goal of education is to create individuals capable of doing new things, not simply repeating what other generations have done."- Jean Piaget

Piaget said this in 1896 and we're still building schools that do the opposite. Memorize, repeat, test, move on.

At Acton, we ask a different question: what does this child need to be capable of doing things that haven't been done yet? Things we can't predict, in a world we can't fully imagine?

The answer isn't more worksheets.

The families who find us are usually nodding before we finish a sentence.
Most of them did fine in school themselves, which is what makes their question brave. They stopped saying “it worked for me” and started asking “could it have been better?”
Better than compliance. Better than sitting still for six hours. Better than grades being the whole point. If you’ve been asking yourself the same thing, you’re our kind of family.

What should Christian education actually produce?

For us, the answer goes beyond strong academics or Bible knowledge alone.

We hope it helps raise young people who know they are deeply loved by God, who develop courage and integrity, who discover their unique gifts, and who learn to use those gifts in service of others.

That doesn't happen in one Bible lesson or chapel service. It grows through the ordinary rhythms of each day: practicing gratitude, taking responsibility, wrestling with meaningful questions, serving the community, and learning to live out faith in everyday moments.

We certainly don't do this perfectly, but it's the vision we're pursuing as we build Acton Academy Lake Oswego.

If that resonates with your family, we'd love to connect. Send us a DM or schedule visit (www.actonlo.com/visit)!
