🎶Currently working on getting our 3rd Children's Mandarin album released.

We just recorded the children's voices for a couple of our songs. They had a blast as it was their first time in a recording studio.

🎻 There is nothing quite like watching a child's eyes light up when they hear a live instrument!

Every week, in our online Mandarin class for little ones (ages 7 and under), we don't just learn the language - we explore the world of music too!

This week, we got up close with the violin 🎻 - seeing it, hearing it, and learning different ways to play it.

And guess what? Next week, we have another surprise instrument!

Can you believe it has been more than 10 years since I first started Heart Strings Mandarin, teaching children Mandarin through Music and Movement?

I first conceived the idea of teaching children Mandarin using the arts modalities in 2012. It took about one year planning the curriculum and writing songs before Heart Strings Mandarin was officially launched in 2013 (in NC, USA). I started with 2 classes and then grew to offering 4 classes a week.

And then, my family located to OR. And I restarted Heart Strings Mandarin with online classes during the covid pandemic.

Currently, Heart Strings Mandarin offers online classes (both group and private), library classes at 10 libraries, and has released 2 "Sing and Learn Mandarin" albums. Each album has 9 - 10 original songs.

This is a follow up on my recent post on "Translanguaging"
As mentioned previously, I grew up in a culture where people use several languages interchangeably within a single conversation.

We do this when interacting with family members, with our friends, and outside in the community.

For example, I might be ordering food from a food stall or at a restaurant, and I can be speaking to the wait staff in a mixture of English, Mandarin and a Chinese dialect, all at the same time.

I might be in a taxi cab and conversing with the driver in 2 or more languages.

Apparently, there is a term for this: Translanguaging

If you've ever caught yourself thinking in one language and speaking in another, you already know what translanguaging is — you just didn't know it yet.

TRANSLANGUAGING is when a bilingual or multilingual person uses languages interchangeably, blending and switching fluidly from one to the other in how they think and communicate.

I grew up in a melting pot where a single conversation could effortlessly weave between English, Mandarin, Cantonese, Hokkien, and Malay — often in the same breath.

Is translanguaging bad? Are there any benefits?
