Heart Strings Mandarin

Early childhood music & movement classes in Mandarin for native and non-native Mandarin speakers The curriculum is uniquely crafted.

Heart Strings Mandarin (HSM) offers music and movement classes in Mandarin Chinese for young children and their parents and caregivers. The objective is many-fold: exposure to Mandarin and acquisition of said language, gross/fine motor development, emotional regulation, musical skills and to have FUN in the process! Currently, we offer virtual theme-based classes with live vocal and music accompan

iment. There are songs, movement, puppetry, stories, and instrument-playing. Classes are taught by a bilingual music educator with training in music therapy and music education. These classes are suitable for both native Mandarin and non-native Mandarin speakers. Materials will be provided to the non-native speaker prior to class. Some English will be used where necessary during class to enable non-native speakers to follow along. We also offer small in-person classes. Yesterday's group online class

One of the things we learned was quarter and eighth notes.

Students played rhythmic patterns with quarter and eighth notes.

I am sure this is a question many parents have thought about. I know I did, as a young parent, years ago.

As an early childhood teacher (teaching through music and movement) and a piano teacher, I'm often asked by parents, "How do I raise a musical child when I do not have a musical background myself?"

Don't worry! You don't need a musical background to raise a musical child. What you need is to create an environment where music is normal, fun, and low-pressure.

Below is what was covered in just Class #1 of our 4-week session. We learned about dynamics, solfège, the quarter note("ta"), playing and maintaining a steady beat and a whole bunch of musical instruments.

Yesterday's class at Bethany Library was a blast!
Even had the adults moving and singing along.

We sang a movement song with scarves and learned how to say "up" and "down" and "turn around" in Mandarin.

The children learned to play the guiro in 2 different ways. They also played boomwhackers and we played them on different parts of our bodies and we played them "fast" and "slow".

Families saw and learned about the metronome and about tempo (speed) and we walked, hopped, and ran at different speeds. We learned how to maintain a steady beat.

We learned how to say "thank you" and "welcome" through a fun drum song. I brought a djembe to show the children.

We say "Happy Birthday" to puppet 小丑，who made an appearance in class.

Young children don't just learn language with their ears — they learn it with their whole bodies. When kids move while they learn, new words and sounds stick faster and stay longer.

That's the idea behind many of our movement songs, including our scarf song here.

What is obvious: The kids are having fun waving, twirling, and dancing with their scarves.

What is not obvious: They're building vocabulary, coordination, and confidence, all at once.

The scarf becomes a tool for expression, turning abstract words like "up," "down," "fast," and "slow", "turn", "jump" into something kids can see, feel, and do. It's playful, it's active, and it's exactly how little learners are wired to grow.

Heart Strings Mandarin designs their classes with early childhood development and developmental goals in mind, with intention and purpose.

Blown away by the beauty of this library in Multnomah County. It is large, airy, and bright with pockets of seating areas (sofas, tables, computers) on both floors.

Additionally, there are meeting rooms of all sizes that you can reserve, a huge teen lounge, auditorium, and its dedicated underground parking area, trimet bus and MAX stop right in front of the building, that occupies an entire city block.

It's got a large collection of Chinese books for both children and adults too. I left with a bagful of children's Chinese books that I can use in my classes.

Maybe one day soon, I'll get to teach my classes here.
