THIS. BOOK. It should be a required text in any high school or college curriculum. This is the most vivid, eye-opening, breathtaking account of war I've ever read. It is not a story of hypermasculine bravery. It is a first-hand account from a shellshocked and horrified soldier, navigating the everyday hardships of two of the most devastating and criminally overlooked battles of the Pacific theater in WWII. An absolutely amazing read.
