Math with DUCKS! Adorable duck counters came in our curriculum kit this month, along with several lesson plans to go with them. In my small group time today, children took turns setting up the math problem and then solved them. Example: There were three families of ducks on the lake. Each family had 4 ducks. How many ducks were on the lake altogether? It was rewarding to see each child demonstrate their knowledge!

What amazing students we have! Through play and discovery on their own, they learned that air can move objects.

Plastic boxes, baskets and cardboard can “float.”

The blue basket was smaller and lighter than the clear box, so why didn’t it float in the same way? H. said because it was smaller and the clear box is the same size of the vent. A. said it is because there are holes in the side of the basket.

Sooo…what else could be moved by the force of air? Mrs. B. gave them a piece of crepe paper. Lots of shrills as they watched it float!

Our shirts and dresses float also. They lined up and took turns seeing what else would float.

Another discovery- water isn’t the only place you can find things floating. Things float in the air, too.

Questions to encourage higher level thinking skills: Would you rather wash a duck or a beaver?

We have been exploring lakes and ponds during our Bubbles, Boats and Floats unit, so this question builds on a current topic.

We predicted which group would have the most votes.

Children voted with a little duck.

The votes were tallied (by children).

Which group had the most? The least?

And THAT, my friends is math in a mixed age group!
