Since I posted about this the last few days, a lot more people have been reaching out and sharing what they’ve seen and experienced. So here’s the bigger picture that’s starting to come together.

Like the previous post said there’s been a noticeable increase in boat stops on the lake. People are getting pulled over for so-called “safety checks” that turn quickly into BUI investigations even when there’s no clear probable cause.

What’s more troubling are the things being said behind the scenes.

Rumor has it officers may be getting bonuses or recognition for BUI enforcement as part of Operation Dry Water the national campaign that ran over the July 4th weekend. New Jersey is reportedly leading the pack and this lake alone has already seen over 100 stops this season. If that’s accurate it raises big red flags because when personal rewards are tied to stops it becomes less about safety and more about numbers.

There’s also been talk about how some of the so-called “trash” restaurants are really feeling the pressure while others seem untouched. That’s leading people to speculate about who might be connected or benefiting. No accusations here just repeating what people around the lake are openly saying.

Even more concerning are reports that probable cause is being loosely interpreted or outright stretched because they know this could blow up. Things like “attitude” vague signs of impairment or just seeing a beer can onboard are allegedly being used to justify full BUI screening. That’s a slippery slope when it comes to the Fourth Amendment which protects all of us from unreasonable searches and seizures yes even on the water.

And the stories are getting more personal.

Someone shared that a sober boater, out on a weeknight with his family was pulled over and arrested right in front of his kids. Taken back to the station. Forced to blow into a breathalyzer. And when it came back clean, he was just told “Sorry sir, you’re free to go. Have a good night.” No apology. No explanation. Just trauma and embarrassment for doing nothing wrong.

Others have shared what happens after these stops and it’s not always black and white.

People are saying that if you lawyer up and spend the money, the big charges often get dropped, and you just end up losing your boating license for a year. So it starts to feel like the system isn’t about safety — it’s about handing out BUIs, getting the numbers up, and then backing off just enough to avoid ruining someone’s life completely. Maybe it’s easier that way legally, but that doesn’t make it right.

There’s also confusion around what to do when you’re stopped. One person said they’d refuse to blow unless they were completely sober. But then others chimed in and said refusing actually makes it worse — one guy got hit harder for refusing than another who blew over the limit. That tells you everything. It’s not just intimidating — it’s unpredictable.

What’s happening now feels less like safety enforcement and more like intimidation. Regular boaters people who’ve been enjoying this lake responsibly for years are saying they’re afraid to go out or they’re not drinking at all just to avoid getting stopped. That’s not a healthy lake culture that’s a problem.

Let’s not lose sight of what this lake is supposed to be a place to relax enjoy and live a little not a zone where you feel like you’re always one “safety check” away from being hassled. So for everyone out there on the water be extra careful right now. These “safety checks” might seem routine but they can quickly turn into full BUI stops even if you’re not doing anything wrong. They know if this was handled openly and fairly it could turn into a big lawsuit so they hide it all behind “safety.” Stay alert know your rights and if you’re drinking maybe just wait until you’re off the water. It’s better to be safe than sorry with how things are going.

Maybe it’s time someone files an OPRA request to get to the bottom of this.

Just interesting how in the U.S., “protect and serve” looks more like “hide and observe.”
Blacked out trucks or in this case unmarked waverunners. Meanwhile in other countries, cops are rolling around in high-vis vehicles that you can’t miss. If the goal is safety, wouldn’t visibility help? Feels more like catching people slipping than keeping people safe. Oh my bad, you can see some of his shirt.

Let’s face it this whole crackdown on boaters at Lake Hopatcong is straight up 4th amendment harassment.

Cops are sitting just feet off the docks at the bars and restaurants, pulling boats over the second they untie all under the weak excuse of “safety inspections.” It’s nothing more than a BUI fishing expedition.

One restaurant owner even walked out to the end of their dock and told the cops they’re scaring away customers and hurting business. So what do the cops do? Move back a few yards and keep sitting there like it’s no big deal.

Heard they pulled someone over for not using a turn signal.
Okay, I made that up.

No reckless driving, no probable cause just regular people leaving dinner on the lake getting hassled. And now the Hopatcong police want in on it too, rolling around in a free drug money boat and jumping on the bandwagon. All under the usual Karen cries of “safety.”

Let’s be real the real problems on this lake have mostly come from rental boats, and let’s not forget that incident with the two guys who wrecked their boat on the island which, from what I heard, they were ex cops, and it all just quietly got swept under the rug.

But instead of dealing with the actual issues, they go after the everyday boaters the same people who keep this lake economy alive.

And don’t even get me started on the keyboard warriors who cheer it on. They don’t go out on the water, they just sit on Facebook, watching other people have fun and getting jealous. Same tired Karens every year, justifying harassment from the comfort of their couch.

Meanwhile, this whole mess is hurting local businesses, marinas, bars, gas docks, sandwich shops, repair guys all getting crushed while cops chase people for doing nothing wrong.

This isn’t about safety. It’s about control and money, and it’s killing the laid back, fun lake culture we all love.

Meanwhile in Florida, DeSantis shut this kind of nonsense down. No more stopping boats without real probable cause the way it should be.
