The past few weeks have been so busy!

Sports season is in full swing and I'm loving that homeschooling gives us the flexibility to not add to much on our plate on game days!

It has been in the 90s and 80s outside lately so we have been exploring our backyard in the mornings and have found that ladybugs love our grass!

Naturally that led us to borrow some non-fiction books from the library to learn more about ladybugs.

We also received our caterpillars in the mail. They have grown so much already. We did caterpillars last year and we are so excited to do them again this year.

We also made a zoo out of paper after we spent some time at our local animal sanctuary.

We also started learning about what happened leading up to Jesus dying on the cross in preparation for the resurrection.

We even got a few lessons of writing, math, reading and science accomplished last week.
Some weeks we only get through one of each, some weeks we get through multiple. 😊❤️

The past few weeks have been busy. Adjusting our schedule to fit in sporadic Tball practices in the late afternoons and we even made some time on the weekdays for playdates with new neighborhood friends! We had some medical issues this week also, which I'll share about eventually but forcing myself to helpmy kinder do his homeschooling this week has helped distract me!

The kids have been doing great going to heir Sunday school rooms so we always end up getting donuts to celebrate. We also took a "field trip" to see our favorite animals at the nearby animal sanctuary.

We even created a checklist for the week for each of his subjects and it's been helping both of us stay on track better. Pictures of that to come soon.

I'm loving this writing curriculum. My son was using The Good and the Beautiful writing workbook but he complained a lot about it and he often didn't do the letters right, even when I was right there showing him. We love this curriculum so much better. It's easier for him to see hoe the letters go and which lines to start with. I highly recommend. We got it off of Amazon but you can find it a lot of different places.

We didn't do take as many photos of our learning this week. This week the kids kept us up more then usual between teething and bad dreams so there were a few days that we did not get a lot of "formal" learning done.

We did some math with counting blocks to cheng it up and make it more fun. Our littlest one explored different texture books and work on trying to knock over all the toys in the shelf while our 3 and 5 year old and I read about bones and the nervous system in our science textbook from Masterbooks.

We then did some more of the KiwiCo crate about the bodies organs. Our 5 year old also got his gear put together for his first Tball practice coming up this week.

We spent Valentine's Day at our local animal sanctuary and even got to speak with one of the animal zookeeper about the animals.

We probably did a total of 20 minutes of learning 3 days this week and the rest was naturally lead learning (like the animal sanctuary) and lots of non-fiction book reading.

I decided to be brave today and we started a painting activities that was part of our Knowledge Crate that we got for some winter learning.

I don't always do a lot of paint crafts because one of my toddlers likes to paint where they aren't supposed to and sometimes it's a struggle. They all did so good though and no one painted on the furniture or their own bodies! I'm proud of myself for braving the paint and proud of them for being responsible with it.

My 5 and 3 year old do the craft and .y 1 ear old dumped all the toys out of our toy shelf. 🤣

The past few weeks have been full of fun, hands-on learning for our 5 and (almost) 3 year old.

Along with lots of book reading, we did activities to learn about winter weather, the artic climate and animals, and we got to learn about hot air balloons. We also spent some time learning how to cook and bake.

Now as we are entering February, we are going to start learning about the human body, with a focus on the human heart. We are also going to spend time learning about God's love for us and loving the people around us. We also have to of our kids birthdays in February, so we will have e some birthday themed learning thrown in as well. ❤️

Reading to your kids daily is so important. Sometimes my kiddos don't stay sitting for long during books (especially my 3 year old) but that's ok!

As long as they are able to hear the words that you are reading, they still get so much out of it. This article (linked below) talks abut some if the research of how reading books ends up exposing your young children to so much more vocabulary then if you don't read to them.

Even if they don't understand all the words yet, those words are being stored in their brain for when they are older. I love to read non-fiction to my kids because there are so many different words that they become exposed to from those. We also enjoy reading fiction picture books as well. The popular one in our house currently is "Hedgie's Surprise" by Jan Brett.

Making Math Come Alive with Fun Manipulatives

One of my favorite ways to make math fun and meaningful is by using hands-on manipulatives. Recently, we’ve been using the cutest little bee counters with a honeycomb ten frame, and they have completely transformed how my kindergartner approaches math. Instead of math feeling abstract or intimidating, it’s playful, visual, and engaging.

My kindergartner loves using the bees to practice adding and subtracting. Being able to physically move the bees into the honeycomb makes numbers easier to understand and helps concepts really click. It’s amazing how much more confident and excited he is when he can see the math right in front of him.
Even better, these bees have become more than just math tools—they’ve turned into our little buddies for reading practice, too! Sometimes a friendly “bee audience” is all it takes to make reading aloud feel fun and low-pressure.

I also love that we were able to find such an affordable, high-quality learning tool at a locally owned and run business. Supporting local shops while bringing home resources that truly help our children learn is such a win-win. Simple tools like these remind me that learning doesn’t have to be complicated to be effective—it just needs to be fun, visual, and hands-on. 🐝✨

I’ve also found that using cute and engaging tools like these bees translates well across multiple elementary grade levels. Even my second-grade students at work have enjoyed having a little bee “cheerleader” join us during reading small groups. There’s something about a friendly, familiar character that boosts confidence and encourages participation. They get just as excited when our bee friend shows up unexpectedly to help us practice math, reminding me that playful learning isn’t just for kindergarten—it’s powerful at every elementary level.

Christmas & New Year Homeschool Recap

The Christmas and New Year weeks were slower-paced when it came to learning, but full of sweet learning moments for our kindergartner and preschooler. Our 11 month old had so much growth during the holidays to and we are just so amazed still at how fast kids grow.

We continued enjoying our Knowledge Crates, diving into all things winter and Arctic animals ❄️🐻‍❄️

We read lots of Jan Brett books, which sparked great conversations, storytelling, and imagination. The kids loved following up our reading with fun crafts—cutting, coloring, gluing, and creating together (learning disguised as fun 😉).

One of the biggest highlights was having friends visit that we hadn’t seen in years. We made memories together at our local zoo, where we got to see tigers, bears, and many other animals up close. Real-life experiences like these are such a gift in homeschooling and make learning feel meaningful and memorable.

If you’re homeschooling a kindergartner, don’t feel pressured to make it complicated. At this age, learning looks like reading together, asking questions, doing hands-on activities, playing, and exploring the world around them. Progress doesn’t have to be loud or worksheet-filled—gentle, consistent learning truly adds up.

Grateful for a cozy season of connection, curiosity, and growth as we head into the new year 💛📚

Found a new favorite learning company!

This week we used Knowledge Crates "Explore Winter with Jan Brett: Preschool - Early Elementary Unit Study" to learn more about winter animals and the artic environment.

We did 3 of the activities this week and the kids were begging for us to do more. There arenstill a lot more for us to do in this one box.

It literally came with all the supplies and instructions for each learning activity. Highly recommend!
