Fusion Academy in Lake Forest, Illinois opened in 2016 as Fusion’s 30th campus nationwide. Fusion Lake Forest is a private school where classes are one-to-one: one student and one teacher per classroom. Our Teacher/Mentors can personalize curriculum and pacing for their students’ strengths, interests, and learning style. Students may attend full-time for middle and high school or part-time with classes for credit, tutoring and mentoring, post-secondary counseling, and more. We offer rolling enrollment so students can start at any point, even mid-semester or mid-year.

In conventional schools, motivation often comes from external pressure — grades, competition, fear. But that kind of motivation is fragile. It exhausts students. 🥺

Real motivation comes from something else: knowing you have support. Knowing you can ask for help without judgment. Knowing someone is paying attention to whether you're actually succeeding.

When a student feels that, they stop pushing through obstacles and start solving them. And focus becomes possible.

When a student struggles in traditional school, the blame usually falls on the student. Lazy. Unmotivated. Not trying hard enough. 😵‍💫

But what if the problem isn't the student? What if it's that the system was never designed for how they learn? One lesson, one pace, 30 kids — that's efficient. But it's not effective for every learner.

For 11 years at Barnstable Academy, Jeff has been doing something rare: he's built a classroom where curiosity is contagious. Students leave his STEM classes still buzzing about experiments and discoveries.

But Jeff's impact ripples far beyond his classroom. He opens his door to colleagues. Leads professional development. Mentors teachers. Organizes the school events. And after the bell rings? He's hosting game nights, building community.

This week we’re celebrating one of our campus icons and resident sit-down comedian, Owen! 🎉 Not only did Owen turn 18 this week, but he’s also been keeping everyone laughing in Homework Café with hilarious presentations featuring his creative (and completely fake!) business ideas.

Whether he’s showing up in his legendary Buddy the Elf costume or brightening someone’s day with his sense of humor, Owen brings so much positivity and energy to our campus. We’re right in the thick of giving our campus a refresh, and it’s been such a rewarding process! 🎨
With a few fresh coats of paint, we’ve started freshening up our walls, and we’re loving the new energy fresh decor brings to our halls. From picking colors to hanging up new pieces, every part of this project has been a true team effort. It’s amazing to see how much brighter and more welcoming our spaces feel already. 💡🌈

What are the Tuesday campus happenings? 🌩️⚡️

Between surviving some wild summer storms and powering through a few outages, we still found plenty of reasons to have fun! New and returning students spent time getting to know each other while learning Flip 7— the newest card game that’s quickly become a campus favorite.

Sometimes the best moments happen when we put the screens away, shuffle a deck of cards, and just enjoy being together. 💙

Looking for a teacher who can bridge both sides of the brain? Nathan’s your guy! ‼️

As our Homework Café Teacher, he has a knack for weaving economics into storytelling and connecting math with writing. His students might spend an afternoon teaching each other physics, acting out a favorite scene from literature, or designing a board game to master precalculus. 🧮

Nathan also leads our Dungeons & Dragons Club 🐉 , where he uses imaginative adventures to help students grow their social confidence, sharpen their critical thinking, and strengthen teamwork. Outside the classroom, he’s often organizing scavenger hunts, leading structured debates, or running crafting workshops in the Homework Café. Thanks to his energy and well-rounded teaching style, Nathan helps every student discover both success and joy in learning. 💡

Meet our next student spotlight, Eryk! This summer, he’s been racing go-karts on tracks around the world—even competing as far away as Italy. Watching him chase his goals, push his limits, and dominate on the track has been so exciting!

When he’s not racing, you’ll find him back on campus making us laugh and bringing great energy to our school community. We can’t wait to cheer him on for another incredible season, both in and out of the classroom! 🏁🌍

Our Student Athlete Spotlight continues with Amelia! ⛸️✨

A rising senior, Amelia spent part of her summer competing at Excel Nationals in Boston, where she earned the title of Intermediate Bronze Medalist—an incredible accomplishment!

When she’s not competing, Amelia is balancing school, coaching younger skaters, and keeping up with her own demanding training schedule. Her dedication, discipline, and passion inspire us every day, and we couldn’t be prouder to have her as part of the Fusion family. Congratulations, Amelia! No two days at Fusion look the same! While some of our students are out competing, traveling, and showcasing their talents, others are on campus diving into creative art projects and explosive science experiments (yes, volcanoes included 🌋). We love giving students the flexibility to pursue incredible opportunities beyond campus during the summer while also offering engaging, hands-on learning every day. It’s the best of both worlds!
