Opponents of preterism argue the Greek word โ€œanastasisโ€[1] refers to physical resurrection. However, thereโ€™s no need to take it that way.

๐—™๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐˜€๐˜, while the word โ€œanastasisโ€ can refer to physical resurrection, it doesnโ€™t have to. Notice how Luke uses it:

โ€œBehold, this Child is destined for the fall and rising [anastasis] of
many in Israel, and for a sign which will be spoken againstโ€ (Luke
2:34).

The word โ€œanastasisโ€ obviously doesnโ€™t refer to physical resurrection in this passage.

๐—ฆ๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฑ, the Septuagint (LXX)[2] uses โ€œanastasisโ€ in contexts that are nonโ€‘physical and often eschatological or symbolic. Here are four examples:

โ€œTo the director; an ode; a psalm of rising up [anastasis]โ€ (Ps. 66:1).

Note: the word โ€œanastasisโ€ is a poetic or prophetic designation that refers to the restoration of Israel.

โ€œYou heard their scorning, all their devices against me; the lips of
ones rising up against me, and their meditations against me the
entire day; their sitting down, and their rising up [anastasis]โ€ (Lam
3:61-63).

Note: the word โ€œanastasisโ€ has nothing to do with physical resurrection in this passage.

โ€œAnd he shall turn his face unto the strength of his land. And he
shall weaken, and shall fall, and shall not be found. And shall rise
up [anastasis] from out of his root a plant of a kingdom, unto his
preparation, casting aside, exacting glory of the kingdom. And in
those days he shall be broken, and not in faces, nor in warโ€ (Dan.
11:19-20).

Note: โ€œAnastasisโ€ refers to the restoration of Godโ€™s kingdom.

โ€œOn account of this wait for me, says the lord, for the day of my
rising up [anastasis], for a testimony! For my judgment shall be
for a gathering of nations, to take kings, to pour out upon them
all of my anger, the anger of my rage. For all the earth shall be
consumed by the fire of my zealโ€ (Zeph. 3:8).

Note: Anastasis refers to a prophetic vision of restoration.

None of these uses of โ€œanastasisโ€ refer to the bodily resurrection of individuals, but rather, to collective divine restoration of people.

As with just about all other words, context is key to determining the definition of โ€œanastasis.โ€

This video examines what Revelation 21:23โ€“25 means when it says there will be "no more night" in the New Jerusalem, and whether this passage disproves preterism. Many Christians interested in Bible prophecy, the end times, and the book of Revelation argue that the continued existence of nighttime proves the New Jerusalem has not yet arrived. But is that really what John intended? By comparing Revelation 21, Hebrews 12:22โ€“24, John 4:21โ€“23, John 8:12, 2 Corinthians 3:14โ€“16, and other key passages, this study demonstrates that the New Jerusalem is the church, not a future physical city, and that Christ's spiritual lightโ€”not the abolition of the earth's nighttime cycleโ€”is the focus of John's vision. Discover how Jesus fulfills the imagery of Revelation as the Light of the World, why believers no longer walk in spiritual darkness, and how this passage fits within a first-century fulfillment understanding of biblical prophecy.

Preterists argue that the passages about the end of the age/last days (see Heb. 1:1-2, 9:26; 1 Cor. 10:11, 1 Pet. 1:20, 4:7; 1 John 2:18) refer to the end/last days of the old covenant age, which officially ended when the temple fell in AD 70. Afterwards, the new covenant age began in fullness.

One of the reasons we hold this view is because the passages were written just prior to (withing a few decades of) AD 70. So the timing fits perfectly.

Futurists sometimes try to get around this argument by citing Ephesians 2:7, in which Paul mentioned โ€œages to comeโ€:

โ€œ[God] raised us up together, and made us sit together in the
heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He
might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness
toward us in Christ Jesusโ€ (Eph. 2:7).

If Paul was living at the end of the old covenant age, futurists argue, then there must be at least one more age after the new covenant age. After all, Paul said this in around AD 62, which was well within the old covenant age. And since there are โ€œages to comeโ€ (plural), per Paul, then there must be at least one more age after the new covenant age that began in AD 70.

Response: If thatโ€™s really what Paul meant in Ephesians 2:7, then Paul not only contradicted the many passages about the everlasting new covenant age, but he also contradicted his very own writings on this subject.

Here are some passages showing that the new covenant is everlasting:

โ€œNow may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from
the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of
the everlasting covenant, make you complete in every good work
to do His willโ€ (Heb. 13:20-21).

โ€œAnd I [God] will make an everlasting covenant with them [Israel]โ€
(Jer. 32:40).

โ€œFor I, the Lord, love justice; I hate robbery for burnt offering; I
will direct their work in truth, and will make with them an
everlasting covenantโ€ (Isa. 61:8).

The Bibleโ€”both Old and New Testamentโ€™sโ€”clearly say the new covenant age is everlasting, which means there cannot possibly be an age afterwards.

Paulโ€™s own statements confirm this too. When discussing the transition between the old and new covenant ages, Paul said:

โ€œIf the ministry that brought condemnation was glorious [the old
covenant], the ministry of righteousness [the new covenant]
exceeds much more in glory! And if what was transitory [the old
covenant] came with glory, how much greater is the glory of that
which lasts [the new covenant]!โ€ (2 Cor. 3:11).

Notice how Paul says the latter glory/age lasts. In other words, the new covenant age is everlasting! This matches perfectly with all those other passages referenced above about the everlasting new covenant age.

Keep in mind, also, that the reason why the previous ages had to end was that they were deficient. For example, in the age before the old covenant ageโ€”the pre-Mosaic ageโ€”the law had not come yet, so people were not yet aware of the magnitude of their sins and their desperate need for Godโ€™s forgiveness. Therefore, this age was deficient and had to end.

The age that followed, the Mosaic age (old covenant age), remedied this problem by magnifying sin and showing people their great need for a Savior (Rom. 5:20). However, there was still no solution for the sin it magnified because the blood of bulls and goats could not take away sins (Heb. 10:4). So the old covenant age, too, was deficient and had to end.

But the new covenant age has no deficiencies. It remedied the sin problem and restored manโ€™s broken relationship with God. Mankind once again has access to the tree of life. As Jesus said,

โ€œI am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone
eats of this bread, he will live foreverโ€ (John 6:51, see also John
11:26).

This was the hope of Godโ€™s people all through Scriptureโ€”the forgiveness of sin, aka resurrectionโ€”and it finally arrived in the first century (Heb. 11:13, Acts 3:24)! Since there is nothing deficient about the new covenant age, it does not have to endโ€”and it wonโ€™t, according to the Scriptures cited above.

What, then, did Paul mean by โ€œages to comeโ€ (Eph. 2:7)? Paul likely used the plural โ€œagesโ€ to emphasize the greatness and majesty of the soon-coming new covenant age, as compared to all previous ages. In fact, Paul said exactly that just a few verses later:

โ€œTo Him [be] the glory in the assembly in Christ Jesus, to all the
generations of the age of the agesโ€ (Eph. 3:21, Youngโ€™s Literal
Translation).

There is a similar kind of statement in Genesis in which God says, โ€œLet us create man in our imageโ€ (plural, Gen. 1:26), which is immediately followed with, โ€œSo God created man in His own imageโ€ (singular, v. 27). As many commentators have pointed out, the plural โ€œusโ€ was likely used to emphasize Godโ€™s majesty and greatness. It certainly does not mean there are multiple Gods, as verse 27 makes clear.

Modern-day monarchs sometimes refer to themselves in the plural too; it is technically called โ€œthe royal we.โ€ For example, the King of England might say โ€œWe will do such and such,โ€ when he really just means โ€œI will do such and such.โ€

Paul was likely doing the same kind of thing. He was emphasizing the majesty and greatness of the new covenant age, the age of ages!

This fits well with the many other descriptions of the greatness and majesty of the new covenant age. For example, the writer of Hebrewsโ€”which many scholars believe was Paul, by the wayโ€”said:

โ€œBut you [Christians] have come to Mount Zion and to the city of
the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable
company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the
firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all,
to the spirits of just men made perfect, to Jesus the Mediator of
the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks
better things than that of Abelโ€ (Heb. 12:22โ€“24).

The passage describes the new covenant as โ€œbetterโ€ than the old. Moreover, Mount Zion was what the Old Testament saints all longed for (Heb. 11:13; Acts 3:24). It was the goal of Scripture (Mic. 4:3; Isa. 2:2, 25:6, 65:25). And the writer of Hebrews said it had finally arrived!

The writer of Hebrews goes on to say that the new covenant age is everlasting:

โ€œNow may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from
the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood
of the everlasting covenant, make you complete in every good
workโ€ (Heb. 13:20).

Since the new covenant age is everlasting, Paul would not have been implying it would end/be replaced in Ephesians 2:7.

One of the strongest evidences for [1] is not only the New Testamentโ€™s repeated ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ด [2], but the way ๐˜ง๐˜ถ๐˜ต๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ด [3] themselves often handle urgent โ€œlast daysโ€ instructions. Although many futurists claim the end has remained imminent for two thousand years, they rarely apply certain apostolic instructions as ongoing obligations today. In practice, they often treat these commands as tied to a unique first-century crisis.

โ€œBecause of the present distressโ€ฆI say, brethren, the time is short, so that from now on even those who have wives should be as though they had noneโ€ (1 Cor. 7:26-29).

Many futurists believe this passage is addressing believers in the โ€œlast daysโ€ time period between Christโ€™s death/resurrection and his second coming. And if the second coming has not happened yet, then this should still be applicable. So why arenโ€™t futurists preaching and living it?

Iโ€™ve heard many sermons about Paulโ€™s advice to stay single (if you are able) in order to devote more time to the Lord. In fact, Roman Catholics have made this a requirement for their priests. But Iโ€™ve yet to hear a pastor advise married men to live as though they were singleโ€”which would still be applicable if the second coming has not happened.

Paulโ€™s advice fits nicely with the looming judgment and imminent end described all throughout the New Testament (see Luke 21:5-32, 1 Cor. 10:13, James 5:8-9, 1 Pet. 4:7). After all, this was an extremely difficult time period for Christians. However, Paulโ€™s statement would make no sense over a 2000+ year period. It seems even futurists realize this, which is why they neither preach nor live it.

โ€œDo not seal the words of the prophecy of this book [Revelation], for the time is at hand. He who is unjust, let him be unjust still; he who is filthy, let him be filthy stillโ€ (Rev. 22:10-11).

Iโ€™ve heard many futurists preach โ€œthe end is near,โ€ but Iโ€™ve yet to hear one preach โ€œlet the unjust remain unjust, and let the filthy be filthy.โ€

From a preterist perspective, the reason why the angel said this was because the second coming/the end was so near that there wasnโ€™t any time to waste trying to convert the unrepentant and suppressors of truth. The Christianโ€™s limited time was better spent going after those who were certain to listen.

But such a message would not make sense in todayโ€™s world. And it seems even futurists realize this. Their practical treatment of the passage suggests they recognize its first-century urgency.

โ€œNow all who believed were together, and had all things in common, and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had needโ€ (Acts 2:44-45).

This is another practice that futurists rarely apply. But why not? If the second coming has not happened yet, then this is how Christians should still be living.

From a preterist perspective, this practice makes perfect sense. After all, there was a looming judgment just over the horizon, and Jesus had told his disciples to flee Jerusalem when the armies surrounding Jerusalem (Luke 21:21). They couldnโ€™t very well do that with all their possessions, so selling their stuff made perfect sense.

But such instruction would be difficult to understand over a 2000-year period. The issue is not whether Christians should be generousโ€”which all Christians affirmโ€”but whether the extraordinary liquidation of possessions in Acts reflects an ongoing norm or an emergency response to imminent historical upheaval.

It seems even futurists understand it is the latter, which is why they do not preach it from their pulpits.

Whether acknowledged or not, most futurists today live like preterists. While they insist the end has remained imminent for two thousand years, they rarely apply the urgent apostolic instructions as though they still belong to the present age.

Contrary to what many Christians believe, the biblical term โ€œunquenchable fireโ€ does not refer to a fire that burns something forever. Rather, it refers to a fire or judgment from God that cannot be extinguished or stopped until it completes its purpose. This video confirms this by looking at how the term was used in passages such as Amos 5:6, Jeremiah 17:27, Ezekiel 20:47-48, Jude 6-7, and Matthew 3:10-12.

This video explores Daniel 12:4, which talks about the โ€œincrease of knowledge,โ€ โ€œrunning to and fro,โ€ and the โ€œtime of the endโ€ and challenges the popular Christian notion that the passage is referring to modern technology, the internet, and scientific advancement. Instead, it argues that Danielโ€™s prophecy was fulfilled in the first century through the unveiling of Old Testament prophecy by Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit during the transition from the Old Covenant age to the New Covenant age. Covering key passages from Daniel, Revelation, Hebrews, Matthew 24, and more, this study explores the biblical meaning of the โ€œtime of the end,โ€ the last days, the destruction of the temple in AD 70, and how end-times prophecy was understood by the early church.

The term preterism basically just means โ€œpast.โ€ It comes from the Latin word preteritus, which means โ€œpastโ€ or โ€œgone by.โ€ So preterists are Christians who believes that the prophecies of the Bible have been fulfilled.

There are two kinds of preterists: partial preterists and full preterists.

Partial preterists believe some of the prophecies of the Bible have been fulfilled and some still need to be fulfilled. Technically, all Christians except full preterists are partial preterists because all Christians except full preterists believe some prophecies have already been fulfilled, and some still need to be fulfilled.

For example, partial preterists acknowledge that Herodโ€™s Temple, which Jesus prophesied would be destroyed within a generation (Luke 21:5-32), was destroyed in the year AD 70. However, partial preterists believe there are other prophecies that still need to be fulfilled, such as the second coming, resurrection, and end-of-the-age judgment.

Full preterists (aka preterists[1]), on the other hand, believe that all of the Bibleโ€™s prophecies have been fulfilledโ€”including the second coming, the general resurrection, and the end-of-the-age judgment.

Keep in mind, just because full preterists believe the New Testamentโ€™s prophecies have been fulfilled does not mean they think the Bible is therefore irrelevant.[2] Full preterists view the fulfillment of the New Testamentโ€™s prophecies (such as the second coming, resurrection, and judgment) in the same way many Christians view the fulfillment of the Old Testamentโ€™s prophecies (such as the first coming of Messiah). That is, even though the prophecies were fulfilled, the books are still highly relevant. They confirm Godโ€™s existence. They show how God worked through history. They show Godโ€™s faithfulness (that he does what he says when he says he will do it). They reveal Godโ€™s wishes for humanity. And they teach moral truths. Such things will always be relevant to humanity.

Hereโ€™s where it can get confusing. As stated above, full preterist often call themselves preterists (for short)โ€”which is same label partial preterists use for themselves when it comes to the book of Revelation. The reason partial preterists call themselves preterists (when it comes to the book of Revelation) is to distinguish themselves from futurists.

Whatโ€™s the difference between preterists and a futurists when it comes the book of Revelation? Preterists believes that most of Revelation, though not all, has been fulfilled. Preterists usually say chapters 1-20 have been fulfilled, but chapter 21-22 still needs to be fulfilled. Keep in mind, there is some variation among preterists as to which parts are past and future.

Futurists, on the other hand, hold that almost the entire book of Revelation still needs to be fulfilled. Futurists usually say that only the first few chapters have been fulfilled, and the rest is still future. Keep in mind, there is some variation among futurists as to what is past and future.

So when it comes to the book of Revelation, a preterist believes that most of the book has been fulfilled, and a futurist believes most of the book is still future. Yet when it comes to eschatology in general, a preterist usually refers to a full preterist, which believes all prophecyโ€”including in the book of Revelationโ€”has been fulfilled.

There is evidence that full preterism is growing. It seems like just about every week, a new preterist book or website or Youtube channel pops up.

There are also many well-known partial preterists and futurists writing books and making videos against full preterism, which shows that they are worried about it. There are even entire websites and ministries solely dedicated to trying to refute full preterism, which shows that the movement is growing.

One of the reasons full preterism is growing is because it directly takes on the most frequently cited objection to Christianity, which is that Jesus failed to do what he and his apostles prophesied.

Anyone who has studied the New Testament knows about the numerous timing indicators about the second coming, resurrection, and end-of-the-age judgment, in which Jesus and the apostles said these things would happen in their generation. These โ€œtime statementsโ€ can be found on just about every page of the New Testament, and they all say the exact same thing, which that these events would happen within the lifetimes of the people they were uttered to. Here are some examples:

๐—ง๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฆ๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—–๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด

โ€œFor the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works. Assuredly, I [Jesus] say to you [disciples], there are some standing here who shall not taste death till they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdomโ€ (Matt. 16:27-28).

โ€œBut whenever they persecute you [apostles] in one city, flee to the next; for truly I [Jesus] say to you, you will not finish going through [preaching throughout] the cities of Israel until the Son of Man comesโ€ (Matt. 10:23).

โ€œAssuredly, I [Jesus] say to you [first-century disciples], not one stone [of the temple] shall be left here upon another, that shall not be thrown downโ€ฆThey will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great gloryโ€ฆAssuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take placeโ€ (Matt. 24:2-34).

โ€œThose of us who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleepโ€ (1 Thess. 1:4).
โ€œBehold, I [Jesus] am coming quicklyโ€ (Rev. 22:7; see also vv. 12 and 20).

โ€œThe coming of the Lord is at handโ€ฆBehold, the Judge is standing at the door!โ€ (James 5:8).

โ€œThe Lord is at handโ€ (Phil. 4:5)

โ€œFor yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and not tarryโ€ (Heb. 10:37).

โ€œNow is the hour to awakeโ€ฆThe night is far spent, the day [of the Lord] is at handโ€ (Rom 13:12). Note: the term โ€œto awakeโ€ refers to resurrection (see Dan. 2:2).

โ€œThere is about to be a rising again of the deadโ€ (Acts 24:15, YLT)
โ€œFor the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works. Assuredly, I [Jesus] say to you [disciples], there are some standing here who shall not taste death till they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdomโ€ (Matt. 16:27-28). Note: the rewarding of each according to his works happens at the resurrection (see Rev. 20:12-13).

โ€œBehold, I tell you a mystery: We [first-century Corinthians] shall not all sleep [die], but we shall all be changed [resurrected]โ€”in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed [resurrected]โ€ (1 Cor. 15:51-53)
โ€œWe [Thessalonians] who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them [the dead] in the clouds to meet the Lord in the airโ€ (1 Thess. 4:17).

Note, also, the below timing indicators about the judgment of the living and the dead, which happens at the resurrection (see Rev. 20:12-13).

โ€œ[Jesus] is ready to judge the living and deadโ€ฆThe end of all things is at handโ€ฆThe time has come for judgment to beginโ€ (1 Pet. 4-17).
โ€œI do fully testify, then, before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who is about to judge the living and deadโ€ (2 Tim 4:1, YLT)
โ€œThe coming of the Lord is at handโ€ฆBehold, the Judge is standing at the door!โ€ (James 5:8).

โ€œAnd even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fireโ€ฆHis winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather His wheat into the barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fireโ€ (Matt. 3:10-12).

โ€œBehold, I [Jesus] say to you [apostles], lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvestโ€ (John 4:31). Note: the harvest refers to both the end-of-the-age judgment and resurrection (see Matt. 13:37-43).

Timing indicators like these can be found on just about every page of the New Testament. And itโ€™s not just a few vague one-off statements here and there; itโ€™s passage after passage after passage, all giving the exact same first-century fulfillment timing. This is why time statementsโ€”which alleged show that Jesus and the apostles uttered false propheciesโ€”is the biggest objection to Christianity.
And itโ€™s not just skeptics of Christianity who say this. Notable Christian theologian C.S. Lewis once said:

โ€œThe apocalyptic beliefs of the first century Christians have been proved false. It is clear from the New Testament that they all expected the Second Coming in their own lifetime. And, worse still, they had a reason, and one which you will find very embarrassing. Their Master [Jesus] had told them so. He shared, and indeed created, their delusion. He said in so many words, โ€˜this generation shall not pass away till all these things are done.โ€™ And he was wrong. He clearly knew no more about the end of the world than anyone else. It is certainly the most embarrassing verse in the Bible."[3]

Full preterists engage this objection head on! Unlike many Christians, preterists donโ€™t try to explain away the time statements. (And really, how does one do that a with straight face?). Preterists not only fully acknowledge what Jesus and the apostles said, but they also show how these events were fulfilled in the first century.

And in a world like today, which places such high value on evidence, the preterist view is refreshing. And thatโ€™s why preterism is growing!

Discover the identity of the Seven Kings of Revelation in this eye-opening study on Revelation 17:9-10. Are these mysterious rulers future world leaders, modern nations, or ancient Roman emperors? This video examines the biblical text, first-century history, and Old Testament symbolism to show why the seven kings almost certainly refers to people in the first century.

Opponents of preterism[1] often claim that nothing substantial changed in AD 70. But nothing could be further from the truth!

๐—™๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐˜€๐˜, the fulfillment of Jesusโ€™ prophecy of the destruction of the temple and city of Jerusalem within the โ€œthis generationโ€ timeframe stated in the Olivet Discourse (see Luke 21:5-32) proved Jesus was who he claimed to be, the Son of God. This temple had been standing for around five hundred years, and it had just been refurbished by Herod the Great. It was so magnificent that the prominent Jews in that day said it would stand forever![2] And the city of Jerusalem was surrounded by what was thought to be an impenetrable wall. Yet the temple/city went tumbling down, just like Jesus had prophesied.

While the miracles Jesus performed in the days of his flesh certainly attested to his divinity to his fellow countrymen, the destruction of the temple/Jerusalem was the exclamation point on it. Moreover, this judgment testifiedโ€”and still testifies todayโ€”to those outside Judea that Jesus is exactly who he claimed to be.

๐—ฆ๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฑ, since Jesusโ€™ prophecy of the destruction of the temple/Jerusalem came to pass exactly as stated, we have excellent reason to trust Jesus when it comes to untestable things, such as, โ€œWhover lives and believes in me will never dieโ€ (John 11:26).

Jesus coming on clouds of judgment in AD 70โ€”along with his resurrectionโ€”affirmed to his first-century disciples that they had put their faith in the right person. It showed that God was on Jesusโ€™ side, rather than Jewish establishment who pierced him.[3]

๐—™๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐˜๐—ต, the judgment in AD 70 gave relief to the Christians who were being persecuted by the Jewish establishment.[4] The head of the persecuting snake, Jerusalem, was cut off.

๐—™๐—ถ๐—ณ๐˜๐—ต, the destruction of the temple in AD 70 was the โ€œsignโ€[5] that the Old Covenant age had officially ended and that the related rituals and sacrificesโ€”such as physical circumcision, Sabbath keeping, feast day observances, and dietary requirementsโ€”were officially defunct.

๐˜๐—ต, the destruction of the temple in AD 70 meant (1) that the Old Covenant โ€œministry of deathโ€[6]โ€”which could not take away sin[7]โ€”had officially endedโ€ฆand (2) that the New Covenant ministry of forgiveness of sin and everlasting life had officially begun in earnest. The death, which had begun way back in the garden of Eden on the day Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit,[8] was finally overcome by Jesusโ€ฆhence, there are โ€œno more tears.โ€

๐—ฆ๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—ต, the Old Testament saints who had died prior to Jesus atoning for sinโ€”who were awaiting their Savior in Hades[9]โ€”were finally released/resurrected out of Hades and allowed into heaven. From that point forward, believers who die go directly to heavenโ€ฆhence, there are โ€œno more tears.โ€

Those who try to diminish the importance of AD 70 have just not grasped the magnitude of what Jesus accomplished. These events were immensely significance, not only for Israelites in the first century, but for every child of God before and after.

[1] Preterists believe the Second Coming happened in the first century based on Jesus saying to his first-century audience, โ€œFor the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works. Assuredly, I say to you, there are some standing here who shall not taste death till they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdomโ€ (Matt. 16:27-28; see also Matt. 10:23, 24:30โ€“34, 26:64; Phil. 4:5; Heb. 10:37; James 5:8; and Rev. 22:7, 12, 20).
[2] โ€œThe temple has for its revenues not only portions of land, but also other possessions of much greater extent and importance, which will never be destroyed or diminished; for as long as the race of mankind shall last, the revenues likewise of the temple will always be preserved, being coeval in their duration with the universal worldโ€ (Philo Judaeus, The Works of Philo Judaeus: Volume 2, The Special Laws, 1:14.)
[3] Technically the Romans crucified Jesus, but they did it at the behest of the Jewish establishment (see Luke 23:21, John 1:11).
[4] This Jewish persecution of Christians is documented all throughout the book of Acts (see Acts 4:3-22, 5:17-42, 6:8-8:1, 8:3, 9:2, 9:23-24, 12:1-5, 13:44-51, 14:5-6, 14:19-20, 16:16-24, 17:1-15, 18:12-17, 19:23-41, 20:19, 21:27-28:30).
[5] Matthew 24:3 โ€“ โ€œNow as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, โ€˜Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?โ€™โ€
Hebrews 9:8-9 โ€“ โ€œThe way into the Holiest of All was not yet made manifest while the first tabernacle was still standing. It was symbolic for the present time in which both gifts and sacrifices are offered which cannot make him who performed the service perfect in regard to the conscience.โ€
[6] 2 Corinthians 3:7 โ€“ โ€œBut if the ministry of death, written and engraved on stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of the glory of his countenance, which glory was passing away, 8 how will the ministry of the Spirit not be more glorious?โ€
[7] Hebrews 10:4 โ€“ โ€œFor it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.โ€
[8] The kind of death that Adam and Eve introduced into the world was spiritual death, not physical death. Back in the garden of Eden, God had warned Adam and Eve, โ€œIn the day you eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall surely dieโ€ (Gen. 2:17). Yet after eating, Adam lived to 930 years (Genesis 5). Adam and Eve even had children afterwards (Gen. 4:25). So their punishment was obviously not physical death; it was spiritual death, aka separation from God. They were immediately kicked out of the garden, lost access to the tree of life, and lost their face-to-face relationship with God. But Jesus restored this broken relationshipโ€”and overcame this death/separationโ€”by sacrificing himself on the cross and atoning for sin (see Heb. 9:26-28).
[9] 1 Corinthians 15:55-57 โ€“ โ€œโ€˜O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?โ€™ The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory [over sin, death, and Hades] through our Lord Jesus Christ.โ€
Revelation 20:13-14 โ€“ โ€œThe sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire.โ€
