On May 3, at approximately 2:00 P.M., Rock Solid Aviation’s Piper Seneca, N32015, was involved in an incident at KLCH. Our multi engine instructor, Slate Fuller, lowered the landing gear while on approach for runway 15 and only the nose gear deployed. Slate performed a tower flyby and the tower was able to confirm that only the nose wheel was down. Slate performed the emergency gear release procedure and the tower was able to confirm all three landing gear had successfully deployed. Slate followed all of the procedures to ensure the landing gear was successfully down and locked. With the tower and all aircraft indicators showing “3 green” Slate landed the aircraft. Shortly after touchdown the gear collapsed and the plane slid to a stop on runway 15. Slate and his student were able to exit the airplane with no injuries. We would like to commend Slate for the exceptional job he did getting the plane back on the ground safely under the unusual circumstances. Although this is not the outcome we were hoping for everyone involved made it home safely at the end of the day. We will be working diligently to try and determine what caused the landing gear malfunction. Rock Solid Aviation would like to thank all of the first responders at Lake Charles Regional Airport for their quick response and professionalism.
