And so it begins...💛

The first few days of a new school year always bring so much fun! We welcomed back familiar faces, met so many new learners and families, and watched our studios come back to life with questions, conversations, laughter, and curiosity.

Right now, the year ahead is still a blank page. There are challenges our learners haven't faced yet, friendships that are just beginning, questions they haven't thought to ask, and so many moments of growth still to come.

We are so grateful for every family who has chosen JOY and trusted us to be part of their learner's story. Here's to a year of discovering, growing, and finding plenty of JOY along the way!

Tomorrow, we begin again!

A new school year means new challenges to take on, new questions to ask, friendships to grow, and so many opportunities for our learners to discover just how capable they are.

Watching our community come together to celebrate this next chapter was the perfect reminder of what makes JOY so special. We can't wait to see where this year takes them.

As adults, our instinct is often to step in.

We see a disagreement beginning and want to solve it, smooth it over, or tell everyone what should happen next. But sometimes, one of the most powerful things we can do is wait.

At JOY, we give learners the opportunity to communicate, listen to one another, and work through conflict themselves. Of course, our guides are there when they're truly needed. But we're continually amazed by what happens when we trust young people enough to give them the chance first.

Every disagreement won't be handled perfectly. That's part of learning, too. We're giving them a safe place to practice something they'll need for the rest of their lives: how to navigate relationships with confidence, respect, and kindness. 🤍

Here at JOY, every learner's journey looks a little different.

Watching confidence grow, responsibility deepen, and character take shape is something we're privileged to witness every day.

Thank you to Marcus's family for sharing their story and for allowing us to be part of his journey. We couldn't be more proud of the young person he's becoming. As we begin another school year, stories like these continue to inspire us and remind us of the incredible potential in every learner. 🤍

As the school year approaches, we're continuing to answer some of the questions we hear most often from families.

This week's question is one that comes up quite a bit:
"Are you a religious school?"

While JOY Lake Charles is not a religious school, it is a community built on love, kindness, generosity, respect, and the belief that every learner deserves to be known, valued, and encouraged.

We welcome families from many different backgrounds, and we're grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow together.

One of the questions I hear most often is, "Do learners just do whatever they want all day?"

It's easy to assume that learner-led means there aren't expectations. In reality, it looks a little different.

At JOY, freedom and responsibility grow together. Learners set goals, support one another, solve problems as a community, and experience the natural consequences that come with real responsibility.

We're not removing structure—we're helping young people learn how to make thoughtful choices, one step at a time.

Middle school is such an important season of life.

It's a time when young people begin discovering who they are, what they're capable of, and how they want to contribute to the world around them. While academics will always matter, we believe these years are also about building confidence, learning to lead, embracing challenges, and becoming more independent with each new experience.

We're so grateful to the families who trust us to walk alongside them during this season. Thank you to Luke's family for sharing a glimpse into why they chose Joy and what this journey has meant to them.

One of the questions I hear most often is, "Why don't learners have homework?"

It's a question that usually leads to a bigger conversation about how we think learning should feel.

At JOY, our goal isn't simply to finish assignments. It's to help learners become curious, independent, and motivated to reach goals because they want to—not because someone is standing over them.
