As a new semester approaches, we're looking back at the people, publications, and moments that have shaped McNeese State University through the years.

Our newest display in the Government Documents department features a student profile from the McNeese Log of our current Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Kedrick Nicholas, from his time as a McNeese student! It's a wonderful reminder that today's campus leaders are also part of McNeese's rich history.

We invite you to stop by the Government Documents floor and McNeese Archives to explore yearbooks, magazines, alumni publications, and other archival materials celebrating McNeese history and the McNeese community, past and present.

Congratulations to Abigail, whose monotype "Skin to Skin" was selected by a panel of jurors as the Library's Choice best in show from the Worlds Collide Ekphrastic Exchange!

Ekphrastic art is all about creative collisions - visual art inspiring poetry, poetry inspiring new perspectives. Thank you to everyone who participated and made this year's exchange such a memorable one!

Have you ever read a poem inspired by a piece of art, or vice versa? We'd love to hear about it in the comments.

"Bowerbird" explores the impulse to collect beautiful things - objects, words, memories - and the vulnerable hope that someone else might cherish them too.

Join us in congratulating Dallas on earning third place in our poetry contest and enjoy his poem below! ✨

Rows and rows of bottle caps line the baseboards of my room,
blue green red, yellow green blue, blue purple white.
Pocket knives and playing cards and zip ties,
if they weren't beautiful there wouldn't be so many.

And rows and rows of words line the back of my teeth,
Spin Orbit Disco, Velvet Moss Carpet, Marble String Tangle.
Analogies and metaphors and entendres,
I arrange them carefully across the forest floor,
and anxiously await,
someone to love all my trash.

Congratulations to Kahlia, the second-place winner of our poetry contest! Through the eyes of an observer at a windowsill, this poem explores perspective, humility, and our desire to reach for something beyond ourselves.

"Big Al Says Dogs Can’t Look Up"

I sit at the windowsill, a story up
And notice
They don’t care if they’re watched,
Those that drone below
Or they just don’t know
And I feel a bit like God

Truly, I’m like God in no way but this
Looking down from my windowsill
Looking down like the rest
Their eyes don’t reach, but notice –
“From the ground we come,” they say,
“And always are returning”

We might be more than a bit like dogs
Aren’t we like dogs in the kennel?
Noses to the dust
Wishing he would kneel
If only to stare the Sun in the eye
And take a scratch behind the ear
