This isn't a post I ever expected to write.

Over the years, I've had the privilege of walking alongside hundreds of families through some of the most vulnerable moments of parenthood.

I've helped babies gain weight.
I've supported moms through painful feeds.
I've worked with families navigating tongue ties, low milk supply, bottle refusal, pumping, returning to work, and so much more.

That's why I'm concerned about proposed changes UnitedHealthcare plans to implement beginning September 1, 2026.

These changes could significantly impact access to lactation care for families by restricting coverage in ways that fail to recognize that breastfeeding support involves BOTH mom and baby.

One of the biggest things I wish parents knew before offering their baby a bottle:

🌸Don't fall for the marketing🌸

The baby bottle industry is full of products labeled as "breast-like," "natural," or "designed for breastfed babies." While those claims sound great, the bottle that looks the most like a breast isn't always the bottle that functions best for feeding.

Choosing a bottle involves more than the shape of the bottle itself. Ni**le shape, flow rate, your baby's latch, oral function, and feeding goals all play a role in finding the right fit.

Here are a few other things I wish more parents knew:

🌸 If you'll need your baby to take a bottle regularly, don't wait until the week before returning to work to introduce one.

🌸 Faster isn't always better. Responsive, paced bottle feeding helps support your baby's natural hunger and fullness cues.

🌸 If your baby struggles with a bottle, refuses a bottle, gags, leaks milk, or takes an unusually long time to feed, don't assume they'll just grow out of it.

🌸 Every baby is different. The bottle your friend's baby loved may not be the best fit for yours.

Most importantly, you don't have to navigate bottles, pumping, returning to work, or feeding challenges alone.

Sometimes a few small changes can completely transform the feeding experience for both mom and baby. 🌸

"After having my first baby, she struggled with feeding and was losing weight. I saw Courtney and she truly changed our feeds. My little one started thriving breastfeeding.
