The other day, I was staring at my list of common irregular verbs, trying to think of a lesson I could create with 10 of them. Immediately, I saw some potential! Swing -> Swung, Slide -> Slid, Broadcast -> Broadcast.

Somehow the clump of words I selected led me to one of the most bizarre stories I’ve ever heard about U.S. culture and history: Dance Marathons of the 1930s and 1940s. Imagine people dancing for days on end, even sleeping while dancing, for the chance to win some cash. It’s a crazy story, and from it, this two-part episode was born.

It’s been a long time since I introduced myself!

My name is Shana, and I’m an English teacher from California. I grew up in a city called Fairfield, which is right next to Napa Valley.

Napa Valley is wine country, and if you’re into wine, picnics, good olive oil, etc., I highly recommend visiting!

5 fun facts about me:

1. If I could, I would go on a picnic every single day. Sitting outside with good company and yummy food is everything to me!
2. I love traveling and learning about other cultures. In my opinion, we appreciate a place more when we know more about it. (See the picture from Grgich? That $40 glass is one of the wines that helped make Napa famous during the Judgment of Paris in 1976!)
3. My husband, Lucas, is Brazilian. He’s been my student for over 10 years and occasionally comes on the podcast! He still makes the occasional mistake, mostly with prepositions. ;)
4. Learning foreign languages with podcasts has been an obsession of mine for a long time. I love these guys: Nagisa Morimoto Elisa | French teacher (I love you guys!)
5. Other than foreign languages and travel, I love baking bread and chasing waterfalls in Asheville, NC! Maybe one day I’ll host an event in town. Would you come?

We’re back in Brazil, and this month we’ve spent every waking minute hanging out with family, eating Brazilian food, and watching sooo much soccer.

Is there such a thing as too much soccer during the World Cup?

Hmm... I’m starting to think maybe. But let’s milk it while it lasts.

Because soccer has become such a hot topic around me, I’ve become very aware of the gaps in my own soccer knowledge. First and foremost:

1️⃣ U.S. soccer history. We got here, and Lucas kept telling people that Americans don’t watch soccer. That comment, combined with the question, “Why isn’t soccer as big in the U.S. as it is in other countries?” inspired me to create Episode 214. In it, you’ll learn how soccer has grown in the United States, and who’s really responsible for that growth. Spoiler alert: it’s not just because of Beckham and Messi.

2️⃣ Soccer commentary. While watching matches here, I quickly realized I have no idea how to comment on a game in Portuguese. There were so many moments when I wanted to yell at the TV along with everyone else, but I needed an entire Portuguese lesson just to keep up! That inspired Episodes 215 and 216.
- In 215, you’ll learn the names of countries and nationalities.
- In 216, you’ll learn how to comment on soccer matches in English with natural vocabulary, expressions, and phrases. In that episode, you’ll also hear about one of the biggest (and best, imho) upsets in World Cup history. :)

Remember Friday night movie rentals? 🍿

In this week’s episode, I’m taking you back to the 1990s and sharing what family movie nights were like growing up in suburban California. From browsing the aisles at Blockbuster with my family to getting those famous red Netflix envelopes in the mail for the very first time, we’ll be talking about how entertainment changed almost overnight.

This is the perfect example and follow-up to our lesson on the expression, To Think Outside the Box.
