Teaching Techniques with Denise Wall Teaching Techniques with Denise Wall is a interactive website that will launch in 2016! Join Denise These exercise have led me to many conclusions and beliefs.

To All Studio Owners, Teachers, Students, Parents, and Enthusiasts of Dance:

Happy New Year and Welcome to Teaching Techniques! My name is Denise Wall, I am a dance teacher and co-owner of Denise Wall’s Dance Energy in Virginia Beach, Va. For the many years that I have been teaching on the convention circuit, I have been asked, “Do you have a DVD of your exercises and how it is you break down the

body?.” As many of the studio owners can attest, your dance studio is a 24 hours a day, seven days a week job that is all consuming, and I simply have not had the time to transpose all of these exercises to a DVD. I have decided to start an interactive website in March 2015 that will have every single stretch, strength building, transition, and performance exercise I do in training my dancers. This page among all other social media platforms will be the nerve center for interaction among all of our members! There will be many functions, features, and discussions on this page that I hope everyone will take advantage of. All of my teaching techniques emerge out of the years of owning my studio and training thousands of dancers. My work in the medical field and understanding of the body led me to a visual system of creating these exercises. On some level, the exercises exist because I was teaching my students the wrong way for many years and I figured out how to get through to my students. This is my life’s work and it is with great joy that I present this platform as a means to share it with dance teachers, dancers, and parents of aspiring dancers the world over. These exercises and techniques are time tested and have proven to work among all of the dancers I have guided to professional careers. I believe in training that is across many genres and disciplines. I believe that this type of training produces well rounded dancers. I believe in sound fundamentals in technique. I believe in committed performance. I believe in understanding the body as a means to be able to express yourself clearly. I believe that you only have one body, one body that needs to be taken care of and that you take the necessary steps to prevent injury. I believe in understanding the “business” becoming and being a professional dancer. I believe in the power that dance has to transform lives. I invite you to this platform to dive into these believes and turning them into reality within the walls of your studio/classroom. To Studio Owners and Teachers:
I hope you find this site and page a useful supplement to your program within your own studio. I in no way have all the answers, these are the methods that have been most helpful for me and I am excited to share them with you. I invite you to this community dialogue in training the next generation of dancers. To Dancers:
I hope you find these exercises useful in furthering your training. These exercises should enhance your training and in no way are a substitute for being in a studio and training within a program. I believe that all dancers should take at a studio and be in class on a weekly basis. I invite you to explore the potential your body has in dance and to learn how to best prevent injury and take care of your instrument. To Parents:
I have 5 sons who all have navigated the tricky waters of being a professional dancer. I invite you to this forum to offer my years not only as a dance teacher but my years as a mom and what you can do to support the ambitions of your children. To ALL:
I welcome you to this page as a forum to discuss the issues that surround the training of a successful dancer; As a tool to share and discover new manners of teaching and connecting with your students and parents, to provide support in the frustrations that we all encounter in this business, to create a community of continuing education, to have a place you feel you can come be supported and to foster your passion for teaching and dancing. Welcome to ALL! Looking forward to this journey with you! Dancingly Yours,

Denise Wall

Six years ago today I got the worse call of my life. It was a call saying that my son Danny Tidwell had been in a car accident and they put him in a helicopter to take him to the hospital BUT he didn’t make it! Those words “He didn’t make it” have haunted me ever since!! 😭That beautiful smile was taken away from me, his brothers, his husband, his family, his friends and The WORLD!! My heart hurts everyday and I thought it would get easier with time but I find myself getting more angry everyday and I worry the girl that was driving the car that killed Danny has done the same thing to another mother. The phone company tracked her texting for over 20 minutes before she hit the vehicle that Danny was the passenger in. She said every time she was texting she pulled off on the side of the road but yet as she went through a stop sign she didn’t brake at all. That is why I couldn’t believe the Prosecutor didn’t ask her if you were not texting when you went through the stop sign where were you LOOKING because you didn’t hit the brakes. There were no brake marks on the road!!!! So of course when court ended she didn’t spend not 1 day in jail to teach her a lesson of taking someone’s life away and how many people will be affected from your actions. Everyone my advice is always tell the people you love that you do love them when they leave your sight. Sometimes we might not like the people that we love because we don’t always agree with their choices especially when their choices effect you but still tell them you love them or you will have regrets if you get that horrible call that I got 6 years ago. I still wonder how much he would have changed the world if he was still here. I guess we will never know. 😭😭😭😭😭

Hey dance fam! 💫 If you’re at in Orlando, I’m teaching a special 2-hour class for my dancers tomorrow — Tuesday 7/15 from 1:30–3:30pm — and I’d love to open it up to ANY dancer or teacher who wants to join… completely FREE. ❤️Meet us right past the big dance awards sign when you come intk the convention center past the lobby in the Dolphin! Please bring a rope if you have one!

We’ll start by talking body placement, then go into a warm-up designed to safely and effectively stretch, strengthen, and prepare your body — with a big focus on injury prevention. From there, we’ll move into center and across the floor, working through your feet and transitions with intention.

This community means the world to me, and I can’t wait to share space, sweat, and growth with you.

Thanks,
Denise Wall ⚡️

Later this evening will be 5 years when I got that devastating phone call that my son Danny Tidwell had been taken away from us because some 19 year old girl decided to break the rules and was texting on her phone for 20 minutes. At the end of her 20 minutes she went through a Stop sign going 50 miles an hour, didn’t break at all and hit a truck that my Dear Danny was on the passenger side. The pain of losing a child doesn’t ever go away. It really disrupted the path of life and I truly understood the path of life that evening because a Parent should never have to bury a child. Our hearts & souls were not made to truly endure this but their are plenty of Parents that do have to endure this and I say God Bless Your Soul because this has been one of the hardest things I have gone through in my life. Then it’s also the pain you feel from your other children and while you are so devastated you have to find the energy and your composure to also help them through this devastating event which will also change their life’s forever. As mothers when our children hurt our hearts & souls automatically hurt so much more. So in saying this please teach people not to break the rules on Texting and Driving because I haven’t even talked about anyone else that ever met my son Danny and loved him or was inspired by him. He was a Dancer, an entertainer and an Educator that was loving giving back so much to this Beautiful Art of Dance but he was a beautiful Person that loved so many, was generous and could make you smile & laugh to make you. feel better.
Danny was my student first. I met him when he was 8 years old when my dear friend and business partner, Vicky Cooke, who was teaching an extra ballet class in the next town for underprivileged children came to me and said there is this little in*******al boy that has so much energy that takes my ballet class and I feel like you should meet him. In fact he has so
much energy he was being thrown
out of class half of the time because he had a hard time controlling it. I said have him come this Saturday after I finish my schedule because I knew I could help him channel his energy the right way. He came that Saturday and it was all fate and in God’s plans because as soon as our eye locked our souls locked. It was instant LOVE for me. So his training started with me and because his home life wasn’t always the best he started spending a lot of time at my house which my boys loved so much. They embraced him as another brother. My son Travis really was inspired by him and they both challenged each other so much but it was a healthy
competitive atmosphere between them So there was so much growth happening. Even though Danny got thrown out of Ballet class when he was younger I would say when he turned 13 he finally started to really respect ballet so much more because he realized it helped him with his Jazz, Modern, Lyrical, Musical Theater, Hip Hop and Tap . At the age of 15 Danny received a Full Scholarship to the Kirov Ballet in Washington, D.C. While he was there he met Vivian Nixon and they became good friends. Vivian’s mother who was Debbie Allen, was actually my biggest idol!! Debbie was casting a show in Washington, D.C. and casted Danny in several of her shows. This is how I started working for Debbie Allen in Los Angeles. Debbie had a big impact on Danny’s and My life and our Careers. Danny’s senior year he received a Full Scholarship to SAB so he moved to NYC to pursue that. Midway through the year he decided he wasn’t completely happy so he withdrew and started training for the IBC (International Ballet Competition). He received a Silver
Medal and Kevin Mckenzie of American Ballet Theatre offered him a Contract into ABT’s 2nd Company. Danny was so excited so he accepted the contract to join the 2nd Company. After a year he then was promoted to ABT’s Company. After years in the Company Danny decided he wanted something a little different so he joined Complexions Contemporary Ballet Company. At that time his brother Travis Wall just came off of being the Ist runner up on Television’s“So You think You can Dance “ 2nd Season and did a tour across America. Danny decided he wanted to try that because he saw how much Travis learned how to work with a Camera which is totally different from doing Stage Work. So he embarked on that Journey and became the 1st Runner like his brother Travis. That is why I call us the 1st runner up Family! Danny went on to do the SYTYCD TOUR across America. After that he did a show in NYC with his good friend Lauren Adams called “Moving Still” where he was fortunate enough to Dance alongside his brother Travis and good friends Jason Parsons and Kenny Easter. Another proud Momma D moment for me was when Travis was contracted to do Choreography and Dance for the Macy’s Performance on Dancing With the Stars and Danny performed with Tiler Peck from New York City Ballet alongside with 3 of my other alumni students Jaimie Goodwin, Taja Riley and Kate Harpootllian. That was a great performance and great to see them all perform together for millions to see. Danny went on to perform on Broadway in “Memphis” and danced with artist like Beyoncé. He also took on a partner and married David Benaym which gave me another son and they started a magazine called
“Movmnt Magazine”. I just wonder what else would my son have accomplished because he did all of this plus more and he was 35 when he was taken from us all.
I was at NUVO Dance Convention the night I received that horrible phone call. I have to thank and also say I am sorry to my dear friend Cami Walton because she was there when I first received the news about my son’s fate and I didn’t handle it well. I have to say the same thing to Stephanie Lynch who was our convention Manager because she was also trying to help me cope with the news because I was screaming and running down the hallways of the hotel trying to find Travis to tell him what had happened to his brother. I want to thank Ray Leeper, Jason Parsons, Will Loftis and Anthony Morigerato for coming to me early the next morning to my hotel room once they heard the horrible news to try to comfort my heart & soul even though their heart was broken too. If I left anyone else I apologize because it was such a blur of emotions that day. The one person I have to say again is Anthony Morigerato!!! We all went home that weekend but Anthony went home to Albany NY once NUVO was done and showed up on my doorstep the very next morning and helped me plan my son’s funeral. I am forever in his debt for that gesture. All my sons Scott, Travis, Tyler, Shannon and Danny’s husband David helped with everything but what Anthony took off of my plate while I was grieving will never be forgotten and I know God gave him extra Angel Wings that day! We had over 650 people that flew in from all over the World. After the celebration of life that day the Whole World shut down for Covid. It was almost Danny said I am not going to be able to deal with this so I will see you later.
My advice to everyone always tell your loved ones how much you love them and hug them like you never want to let go because it could be your last time. Even if you have an argument just agree to disagree and tell them you Love Them!! I don’t wish this Broken Heart on anyone! 😭😭
