Here’s some math problems in honor of Epcot’s anniversary!
⁣
1️⃣ If the Epcot sphere has a diameter of 165 feet, what is its volume?
⁣
2️⃣ Spaceship Earth is covered in 60 isosceles triangles, which are then divided into 16 equilateral triangles each. Each of these equilateral triangles is then divided into another 12 isosceles triangles.
⁣
How many of these smaller isosceles triangles should ideally cover the entire surface area of Spaceship Earth?
⁣
3️⃣ Using information from the first two questions, how much surface area of the sphere does each of the smaller isosceles triangles take up?
⁣
Helpful Equations:
⛳️ Equation for volume of a sphere = 4/3*pi*radius*radius*radius
⛳️ Equation for surface area of a sphere = 4*pi*radius*radius
⁣
Hints:
❗️ Surface area of a geodesic sphere with diameter 165 ft = 85529.86 square feet
⁣
‼️ According to a 1996 book on Walt Disney World, in actuality, there are only 11,324 triangular facets on Spaceship Earth because of doors and support beams.

Bonus questions:
4️⃣ How many fewer triangles does Spaceship Earth have compared to a complete geodesic sphere?

Happy fall, y’all!

Why do we have seasons?

Because Earth’s axis is tilted by 23.4 degrees

The fall equinox marks the point in the Earth’s revolution around the sun when the Northern hemisphere gets as much light as the Southern hemisphere

From the summer solstice until the winter solstice, the Northern hemisphere is tilted away from the sun

This causes less direct sunlight to spread over the Northern latitudes

Less light = colder weather

While the seasons changing might bring cooler temperatures, that DOES NOT mean climate change is a hoax

Weather DOES NOT equal climate

Climate is the average weather pattern over a long period of time

And climate change is leading to more extreme weather - both hot and cold - because of human actions

How to evaluate candidates’ policies on climate change:
❓Do they trust scientists’ evidence that climate change is real?
❓Do they support the Green New Deal?
❓Do they oppose new coal, oil, and gas projects?
❓Have they pledged to not receive funds from oil, coal and gas corporations?
❓Do they have a plan to make your community more sustainable?

Politicians’ stances on these questions matter at the national level but also at the LOCAL level.

People in charge of utilities, transportation, agriculture, public health, and business have a role in combating climate change.

Local legislators and judges can also enforce taxes and fines for energy consumption and pollution.

Walt Disney World’s Halloween decor won’t be complete until September 15th.

But I’m ready for all things fall today. I even searched the Target app for pumpkin decor.

Have you ever considered decorating with papel picado like in Cars Land?

Papel picado is the Mexican folk art of cutting paper with chisels.

It is often used to decorate ofrendas (altars) during Día de Mu***os (Day of the Dead), but is also part of other celebrations like Easter and baptisms.

This tradition has combined paper cutting crafts from several cultures.

Before Spanish colonization, the native peoples of Mexico made paper from fig and mulberry tree bark and cut it with obsidian knives.

This practice was called amatl and often depicted Aztec deities.

Paper-making and cutting was invented in China in 105 AD and spread to Japan and Central Asia by 750 AD.

Then the Moors, who occupied Spain and traded with China, cut geometric patterns in their paper crafts.

After Islamic culture flourished in Spain, paper crafts spread throughout Europe, including what became known in France as silhouettes.

Some of the most intricate designs can take more than 30 hours, but the International Folk Art Museum has a free lesson plan on how to make simpler designs in much less time!
