Teaching social skills and providing social coaching to my learners is so fun! But what’s more fun is playing a new game and seeing them put what they’ve learned into action.

I was lucky enough to hear Jessica Minahan, author of the Behavior Code, present and she reminded us that “Incentives do not teach a skill. Incentives only increase motivation.” We need to remember to actually teach a skill to our learners. We can use incentives or reinforcement after students practice the skill and learning the skill as well as when students demonstrate that skill in the natural environment.

Using a sticker chart, a clip chart or dangling ipad time alone WON’T change behavior if we haven’t explicitly taught the skill.

Emotion underlies all learning……

I have been learning a lot about Assent Based Learning… do you want to know what that is?

So ASSENT happens when our learners can tell us, verbally or nonverbally if they want to participate in what we are presenting to them or trying to teach them. We know kids can often show us with their behavior (screaming, throwing things, walking away, falling to the floor…) that they don’t want to. This type of emotion does not lend itself to positive learning.

We need to design a program for our learners based on learner values.

BCBA’s can analyze the situation and ask the question…Is assent happening or withdrawal? What is the learner responding to…Is the adult not fun? Are the materials boring? Do you have rapport with the child/young adult? What format of teaching are you trying to use?

We need to pause to observe our learners, re-evaluate and make changes to the teaching situations so positive and fun learning can happen.

Assent Based Model incorporates honoring a learners withdrawal from the situation and then teaching the learner specific ways they can withdrawal assent in an expected way.

Respecting our learner’s choice builds autonomy and teaches self-advocacy ,which are life lessons we want our kids to have!!

Let me know what you think…
