Today is Princess Victoria Ka'iulani's 150th Birthday.

From "Princess Ka'iulani' Her Life and Times":
When Ka'iulani arrived at New York harbor, several newspapers across the United States and Hawaii, published Ka'iulani's statement to the American people:
"Unbidden, stand upon your shores today where I thought so soon to receive a royal welcome on my way to my own kingdom. I come unattended, except by the loving hearts that have come with me over the wintry seas. I hear that commissioners from my land have been for many days asking this great nation to take away my little vineyard. They speak no word to me, and leave me to find out as I can from the rumors of the air that they would leave me without a home, or a name, or a nation.

Seventy years ago Christian America sent over Christian men and women to give religion and civilization to Hawaii. They gave us the gospel, they made us a nation and we learned to love and trust America. Today three of the sons of those missionaries are at your capital asking you to undo their fathers' work. Who sent them? Who gave them authority to break the constitution, which they swore they would uphold.
Today, I, a poor, weak girl, with not one of my people near me, and all these Hawaiian statesmen against me, have strength to stand up for the rights of my people. Even now I can hear their wail in my heart and it gives me strength and courage and I am strong, strong in the faith of God, strong in the knowledge that I am right, strong in the strength of 70,000,000 people who in this free land will hear my cry and will refuse to let their flag cover dishonor to mine.”...
Ka‘iulani’s presence in the US forced the American press to eat their words. They recorded her every move, from the moment she set foot on American soil.

Reports of Ka'iulani's speech quickly reached The White House. President Grover Cleveland and his wife First Lady Frances Cleveland were impressed, and wanted to meet this “Woman of the Hour”. Upon reading the reports of this accomplished, Crown Princess, who was being educated in England in preparation to inherit the throne of Hawaii, Cleveland believed it was possible that he been misinformed about the state of affairs in Hawaii.

"Her beauty, grace and sweetness completely won Mrs. Cleveland's heart, the President was charmed with her—how could it be otherwise? And Mr. Davies’ representations put matters before President Cleveland in a new light. Cleveland became aware of abuses which he had not suspected; he promised to do all he could in the interests of Princess Kaiulani, and he was as good as his word."

In her darkest moments, Ka'iulani found the strength to cross the ocean and fight for her nation. In the face of widespread slander and libel against the Hawaiian people and Monarchy, she faced the world and spoke the truth. Her frank words and stunning beauty took the American President, people, and press, by storm, changing forever their idea of the Hawaiian people. Her mission to America was a triumph. She was only seventeen at the time.

Throwback Thursday - In 2019 The Princess Ka'iulani Project traveled to Northamptonshire, England in search of the home Ka'iulani lived in with her teacher, Mrs. Sharp. The Yews is now a private home for senior citizens and still proudly stands. We were allowed inside to experience the home and the bedroom where Ka'iulani once lived.
This coming October 16 is the 15th anniversary of Royal Ho'ike at Waiola Church which was the fist celebration of her birth since she died in 1899. We hope to commemorate her again this October in Lahaina.

October 16, 2025 will be the 150th birthday of Princess Victoria Ka'iulani. 2025 gives us two years. Her 135th birthday we celebrated at Waiola Church in Lahaina. Are you thinking what I'm thinking?

Enjoy photos from that day, Saturday, October 16th, 2010 ...

History was in the making at Lahaina Royal Ho'ike - From the Keiki to Ka'iulani and the Crown. This event, which was produced by the kokua of those who not only care, but are active in supporting the Hawaiian culture which surrounds us, celebrated the 135th birthday of Crown Princess Victoria Ka'iulani in this year of the Hawaiian Kingdom Bicentennial, 1810 - 2010.

From 9am - 5pm - In sunny Lahaina Town, families enjoyed live music on stage, vendors booths, jewelry, Hawaiian crafters, carvers, local artists, hula halau, Celtic booths, food booths, health screenings, silent auction, massage, history and cultural specialists and displays, Hawaiian Games, tours of the sacred grounds of Moku'ula and Waiola, and much more. Ho'okupu offerings to Queen Keopuolani were presented at her tomb and ho'okupu offerings to Princess Ka'iulani were presented to descendants of the Princess's family and accepted personally by the Grand-niece of Hawaii's Crown Princess., Betty Hay Freeland
Then the audience traveled 135 years back in time to see the gripping story of Princess Victoria Ka'iulani Cleghorn.

Lead by project producer/actor/writer Jennifer Fahrni, her story was told through letters, interviews music, hula, and performance of selected scenes from the original upcoming production “Ka’iulani - The Island Rose”. Performers included actors, Camille Romero (Ka'iulani), Wilmont Kamaunu Kahaiali'i (King Kalakaua), Brian Connolly (Archibald Cleghorn), Steve Hatcher (Robert Louis Stevenson), Hamish Burgess (Scottish bagpiper), and Halau ‘O Keaunui ‘O Maui. Also included, were some never before seen photographs, and recently uncovered information from Bishop Museum archivists.

Visitors experienced Lahaina's Royal Past and the rich culture of Hawai'i at the House of Keopuolani, the wife and mother of Kings. Keopuolani, who was born in Maui, was of the highest mana. Even the esteemed Kamehameha was her inferior in terms of mana, and had to bow when in her presence. By marrying her, Kamehameha's children would be ensured of the highest ali'i rank. Two of their twelve children together, were Kamehameha II and Kamehameha III. Keopuolani chose to be buried at the sacred Waiola Church in Lahaina, where Christianity began here on the island of Maui. Other alii buried at Waiola include Princess Nahi'ena'ena and King Kaumuali'i of Kauai, who peacefully capitulated to Kamehameha the Great, which was significant in the forming of the Hawaiian Kingdom 200 years ago.

Today is the 148th Birthday of Crown Princess Victoria Ka'iulani Cleghorn. October 16, 1875 the Hawaiian nation welcomed the birth of Archie and Miriam Kapili Kekauluohi Likelike's daughter, Princess Victoria Ka‘iulani Kawekio I Lunalilo Kalaninuiahilapalapa Cleghorn. The city was alive with the sound of church bells ringing to celebrate her royal birth, as highest born ali'i of her generation.
In 2010 we celebrated at Lahaina's Waiola Church. On the church grounds are the tombs of Keōpūolani and Princess Nahienaena. Chiefess Queen Keōpūolani was the wife King Kamehameha l and mother of Kamehameha II and lll. The wife and mother of Kings laid to rest in Lahaina. We hope to return to Waiola in 2025 to celebrate once more.
