AICAD is pleased to announce that the AICAD/NOAA Fisheries Art + Science Fellowship continues into its third year. The application for this year's residency and award is open now. Applications are due by January 5th, 2022.
The AICAD/NOAA Fisheries Art + Science Fellowship aims to provide a hands-on opportunity for a recent graduate to apply their art & design education in addressing and communicating ecological and social concerns, and bridge communities around challenging resource issues. Potential outcomes will include public talks at various locations including: galleries and museums; educational settings including schools and colleges; and science/policy and art/design conferences. Work produced by the Fellow in response to the described dilemma may be shown to the public in gallery settings or alternative artistic venues and NOAA Fisheries offices and headquarters. Documentation of the work and process as well as final finished work will be distributed through digital and print media and reach a variety of audiences including the national art & design and scientific communities, and the public at large
The successful candidate will complete a 6-week residency embedded with NOAA staff during June-July 2022 in the West Coast Region, followed by a six-month period from August 2022 to February 2023 in their home location to research, produce, and distribute creative work in response to the scientific and policy issues the artist/designer will be exposed to.
The most recent fellow, Steph Fogel, wrote an excellent retrospective of their time as the 2021 AICAD/NOAA Fisheries Art + Science Fellow, a great read for anyone who is curious about the work they might be asked to complete: https://stephlittlebird.medium.com/my-year-as-the-aicad-noaa-national-artist-fellow-6bc235474852

We always love to share what our LCAD alumni have been working on and today we are highlighting Illustration Alum, Spencer Hidalgo ('16)!
Spencer gave us some insight into what he's been working on lately, saying, "I've done some freelancing for indie games and illustrated a children’s book, but most of my time after LCAD has been working for an ad agency called Blt Communications. It’s given me the opportunity to take what I’d learned in my studies and apply it to ad illustrations for major networks like Netflix, Amazon, HBO, and Disney. It’s fun being able to point at something that’s on a billboard or key art on a streaming service and be able to say 'Hey! I helped make that!' It’s also helped me strengthen my skills for working on personal pieces, so it’s nice to know that the learning process continues after graduation."

Sending congratulations to Alum, Alfred Paredes who has been commissioned by the new Le Méridien Hotel, to create a statue honoring Anita Baldwin.
Alfred told us, “I’m very honored to have been awarded my second public monument for the city of Arcadia, in which I get to celebrate the life of Anita Baldwin. Anita had a very large shadow cast upon her by her very successful father. But she not only managed to step out from under that shadow with her accomplishments, she also left behind a lasting legacy of charity. She worked with wounded horses returning from WWI battlefields and started a children’s hospital in Los Angeles. She was also an accomplished writer, musician, and cook.
Trying to bring so much of her story to life was an interesting challenge. I turned to one of my favorite sculptors, Daniel Chester French, for my inspiration. His allegorical works for the Boroughs of New York and the continents of the world gave me the type of visual language I needed to tell Anita’s story."
Installation is scheduled for the Fall of this year. Follow along with the progress:

Sending huge congratulations to Alum, Vincent Kings, 2016 Animation, on the release of the graphic novel, This is Where we Fall!!
This Is Where We Fall "depicts an after-life that's defined by the manner in which you died, and not the merit of the life you lived," written by Chris Miskiewicz (Grateful Dead: Origins, Thomas Alsop) and illustrated by Vincent. The book is also being released with an original score by the artist "Mitski" distributed as a QR code in the regular edition, with cassette & vinyl's for the deluxe editions. The book is being released in bookstores March 9th.
Vincent also added "Comics are a blast, and for an animator they’re like fancy storyboards. So that storytelling knowledge transferred with no problem, and thanks to LCAD who let me sneak across majors into Brian Apthorp’s comic illustration class for the pure comics stuff. Thanks to all my professors, mentors, and friends for the education I received at LCAD!"
