🇮🇹 Italian Grammar Spotlight: Telling Stories with "C'era una volta"

("Once upon a time there were a prince and a princess…")

If you've ever read an Italian fairy tale or children's book, you've almost certainly encountered the magical phrase "C'era una volta" — the Italian equivalent of "Once upon a time." But why "c'era" and not the other options? Let's break it down.

The Three Choices Explained:
A.) "Ci sono stati" is the "passato prossimo" form of "esserci," meaning "there have been." This tense is used for events that are connected to the present or have a defined endpoint. It doesn't carry the timeless, narrative quality needed for storytelling.

B.) "C'erano" is the imperfetto plural form — "there were" — used when referring to multiple people or things. Since the sentence mentions both a prince and a princess (two people), this would actually be grammatically defensible, but it lacks the classic fairy tale rhythm.

C.) "C'era" — the correct answer — is the "imperfetto: singular of "esserci," meaning "there was." In Italian storytelling tradition, "C'era una volta" is used as a fixed, idiomatic phrase regardless of whether what follows is singular or plural. It is the conventional fairy tale opener, frozen by centuries of usage. And THAT is how you say, "Once upon a time..." in Italian!

"Ci sono" — There Is / There Are

Ci sono tre piatti sul tavolo.
("There are three plates on the table.")

Italian uses "c'è" (there is) for singular nouns and "ci sono" (there are) for plural nouns.

Since "tre piatti" (three plates) is plural, "ci sono" is the correct choice — not "è" or "ha." Mastering this distinction early will make your Italian sound far more natural.

Subject-Verb Agreement with Plural Subjects

Stefano e Elisa hanno tutti e due vent'anni.
("Stefano and Elisa are both twenty years old.")

When the subject is plural — even two named individuals like Stefano and Elisa — the verb must agree in the third person plural. That means "hanno (they have)," not "ha" (he/she has) or abbiamo (we have). This is a classic agreement trap for learners who default to the singular.

Also, remember that "hanno" is pronounced with two N's. Don't forget the double consonant!
