What happens if the budget is defeated? (Part 2)

If the Arlington budget is defeated twice, New York State law requires them to adopt a contingency budget. What does a $5.625 million reduction look like for our students?

Fewer Programs: Potential cuts to the educational and extracurricular programs that students love.

Zero New Equipment: No new furniture or non-instructional equipment.

Resource Cuts: Reductions in student supplies and capital improvements.

The proposed budget seeks to find a balance—preserving the student experience while navigating today's economic pressures.

Please educate yourself by getting more information about this year's budget at the website: https://www.arlingtonschools.org/o/acsd/page/budget-vote

Make sure your voice is heard! Please vote YES on May 19.

What happens if the budget is defeated?

As we approach the May 19 vote, it’s important to understand the process. If the proposed budget does not pass, the Board of Education has three choices: resubmit the original, present a revised version, or move directly to a contingency budget.

By law, a contingency budget requires a 0% tax levy increase. For Arlington, this would mean an additional $5.625 million in cuts beyond what has already been proposed.

These mandated reductions would include:
Eliminating all new equipment purchases (except tech).
Further staffing and educational program reductions.
Cutting student materials and extracurricular activities.

We encourage everyone to stay informed. Visit the District website at www.arlingtonschools.org for the full budget details.

Please Vote YES on May 19!

The 2026-2027 budget capitalizes on two major initiatives designed to support Arlington families:

Expanding Pre-K: The District will be using state-earmarked funding to add three new classrooms. That’s more four-year-olds getting a head start and more families saving on childcare!

Early College Access: They are investing in a partnership with BOCES to offset tuition for college-level courses taken right at the high school. It’s a move that will become cost-neutral over time and save families thousands in future tuition.

They are finding the opportunities our children need to succeed!

To learn more about these initiatives, the entire budget proposal, this year's propositions, and who is running for the Board of Education go to: www.arlingtonschools.org

Make your voice heard by Voting YES on May 19!
