PB&J Day in 5th Grade!

Our 5th graders kicked off their writing unit this week with a hands-on lesson proving one very important point: DETAILS MATTER!

Earlier this week, students began by writing instructions explaining how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Their directions were then put to the test…literally! Mrs. Britt made a couple of sandwiches (or lack there of). When important details were left out, the results made for some pretty interesting “sandwiches.” 😂

Students used what they learned to edit, revise, and rewrite their original directions, focusing on precise language, sequencing, transition words, punctuation and writing with their audience in mind. For the final challenge, students traded directions and had to make a PB&J by following someone else’s instructions EXACTLY as written.

We even had some surprise guest readers and sandwich makers join in on the fun! Our students loved watching their writing come to life and quickly discovered that effective writers can’t assume their readers know what they mean, they have to communicate it clearly.

This hands-on experience gave students an authentic reason to revise their writing and see firsthand how word choice, organization, and specific details can impact a reader’s understanding.

Good writers don’t make their readers guess! 📝👏

And we’re not finished with PB&J just yet! Tomorrow, students will explore the history behind this classic sandwich through Storyworks before using text evidence to develop and support their own opinions. 📚🥜🍇
