Please join us in celebrating John Tweedel, our September Employee of the Month!

Over the past three years at SoLAcc, John has transformed how students experience math by bringing warmth, humor, and patience to every single lesson. Rather than letting intimidation stand in the way of learning, he often refers to himself as the "Bob Ross of math education."

John says he is guided by a lesson from his high school calculus teacher, Mr. Kevin: "I don't teach math; I teach students. I do it using math."

Whether he is greeting visitors at the Devalcourt building through his signature movie quotes, offering encouragement, or listening with a compassionate ear, John embodies the heart of SoLAcc. He reminds us daily that education thrives on genuine connection, mutual respect, and dedicated service to others.

Nearly 300 people joined us in Devalcourt Auditorium for the Wellness Collective Resource Fair, and the energy in that room was absolutely incredible!

Between the fun games, great giveaways, and the wealth of information, we watched Acadiana come together in the most beautiful way. Real conversations happened. Meaningful connections formed. Support systems strengthened.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to the 36 organizations that filled the room with joy. Your presence ensures our students, staff, and neighbors always know where to turn for guidance, wellness tools, and uplifting encouragement.

Great education does not happen in a silo. It happens when community leaders step up to make sure students have the tools, spaces, and opportunities to build a better life right here in Acadiana.

In Morgan City, the Hugh & Byrnes Young Foundation has done exactly that.

From donating the waterfront land for our Maritime and Petroleum Safety Training Center to funding scholarships and helping launch our Commercial Diving Center of Excellence, their partnership has poured over $6 million directly into our students and our region.

Last week at the 2026 Louisiana Community & Technical College System Impact Awards, the H& B Young Foundation received the Walter G. Bumphus Excellence in Leadership Award in honor of that decades-long commitment.

Dr. Vincent June, Chancellor of SoLAcc, shared what this long-standing relationship means for our community:

“The H&B Young Foundation has been a true partner in our mission and in the future of this region. Their leadership has created opportunities for generations of students while helping us respond to the workforce needs of the industries that drive Morgan City and South Louisiana. We are proud to see that legacy recognized statewide.”

Last week, Leadership Vermilion Class XII visited our Abbeville Campus to explore the programs and pathways helping our neighbors succeed. Nine dedicated local leaders toured our classrooms and connected directly with our team.

During the visit, our Adult Education and Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) teams shared how you can gain in-demand skills, complete your high school equivalency, or start fresh in a new career right here at home.

Dr. Damien Glover, Interim Assistant Vice-Chancellor for Student Affairs, closed out the day by sharing how SoLAcc works every day to serve Vermilion Parish and open doors for every student.
