Lafayette Parish 4-H

Lafayette Parish 4-H 4-H is a community of young people across America who are learning leadership, citizenship and life Jean Church in the center. Louisiana is the only U.S.

The Lafayette Parish region of south Louisiana was settled by French-speaking Acadians in the mid 1700s. The British had driven them from Nova Scotia for refusing to take an oath of allegiance to the English Crown. The Acadians were joined by another group of settlers called Creoles, descendants of African, West Indian and European pioneers. At the time of the migration, Louisiana was under Spanish rule, and authorities welcomed the new settlers. Lafayette began as Petit Manchac is the mid-1700s when the English and Indian traders flocked to the point where the Old Spanish Trail crossed the Vermilion River. In 1821, An Acadian refugee, Jean Mouton, formally designed Lafayette with St. The town grew around the church, and in 1824 individual parishes were formed. state divided into parishes instead of counties. The original division matched jurisdictions of the Roman Catholic Church. The community incorporated in 1836 as Vermillionville. Agriculture and cattle raising boosted the economy, and the community prospered until the region was nearly destroyed by yellow fever and the Civil War. In 1881, when the railroad was extended from New Orleans to Houston, the area again prospered. The town's name was changed to Lafayette in 1884. In 1940, oil companies began to establish offices in Lafayette because of its central location to oil activities. Today, Lafayette is a center of gulf oil and gas industry. Learn, Grow, Eat and Go were key messages at the 4-H School Garden workshop held in Lafayette Parish conducted by Master Gardeners, 4-H Garden Ambassadors and LSU AgCenter Horticulture, Nutrition and Community Health , and 4-H Agents and Staff. Nearly 75 students, teachers and garden enthusiasts gathered at Martial Billeaud Elementary for the LSU AgCenter’s School Garden Initiative Annual Kick-Off Training. The initiative, supported by the LSU AgCenter, aims to promote learning by combining school curriculum, nutrition education and gardening.

Eight Lafayette schools, including Alice Boucher Elementary, Cathedral-Carmel Catholic School, L. Leo Judice Elementary, Live Oak Elementary, Martial Billeaud Elementary, and Our Lady of Fatima Catholic School are incorporating this concept into their curriculum. Each school has a team of students and faculty members participating in the training, with Master Gardeners serving as advisors. The training includes presentations on basics of gardening, plant selection, soils, service-learning, MyPlate, and health.

The School Garden Initiative is a collaborative effort between school administration, faculty, students, Lafayette Master Gardeners, the LSU AgCenter’s 4-H Youth Development Program and Lafayette Parish School System. Sponsors of the program are Lafayette Parish School System, Lafayette Parish Farm Bureau, and Lafayette Parish Master Gardener’s Association. The goal is to foster healthier lifestyles and stronger community collaborations through school gardens.

Apply for the LSU AgCenter Extension Internship Program and gain real-world experience in agriculture, nutrition, youth development, and community outreach while earning $15 per hour.

In its third year, the program will place 30 interns across Louisiana to work alongside LSU AgCenter extension agents and faculty. This is a great opportunity to build professional skills, explore Extension careers, and make a difference in local communities.
