First responders do not just show up when things go wrong. They spend years learning to read situations, make fast decisions and use science and technology to help people in ways most of us never think about.

The tools they use are built by engineers. The decisions they make rely on pattern recognition and critical thinking. The technology behind every ambulance, fire truck and emergency system was designed by someone who learned to code.

What if your child got to experience all of that firsthand?

Not through a textbook or a video. Through a morning of hands-on challenges that put them right in the middle of it.

That is exactly what is waiting for them at our First Responders Open Lab on October 3 at Code and Play in Lafayette, LA.

Have you ever wondered why an emergency siren sounds so loud up close but changes pitch as the ambulance zooms past?

Sound is not just noise. It travels in invisible waves moving through air, water and solid objects to reach our ears.

If you have a curious kid at home, here are 3 simple hands-on ways to show them how sound actually travels using things already at home:

1. The Siren String Phone : Poke a small hole in the bottom of two paper cups, thread a long piece of string through both and knot the ends. Pull the string tight and have your child whisper into one cup while you hold the other to your ear.

Why it works: Sound travels faster and clearer through solid objects like the string than through open air. That is why emergency radios and communication systems use direct transmission rather than open broadcast wherever possible.

2. The Hanger and Spoon Chimes: Tie a metal spoon to the middle of a string. Wrap the two loose ends around your child’s index fingers and have them press their fingers gently into their ears. Tap the spoon against a table.

Why it works: Instead of a dull click they will hear a deep rich chime. The sound travels straight up the string into their ears instead of spreading out into the room. This is why stethoscopes work the way they do.

3.. The Paper Roll Siren Megaphone :Grab an empty paper towel tube. Have your child make a siren sound out loud then repeat it directly into the tube pointed across the room.

Why it works: Normal sound spreads in every direction but the tube focuses it into a straight line. That is exactly how real emergency sirens project sound down busy streets to cut through traffic noise.

When a curious child is handed repetitive tasks or passive screen time they naturally tune out.

This has nothing to do with being unable to focus but their brain is done with what is in front of it and needs something harder to sink into.

Watch that same child spend 3 hours building something, figuring out a puzzle or coding a robot, and the attention span argument falls apart immediately.

The restless energy disappears, and deep focus takes over because something finally gave their brain enough to work with.

High energy curious kids do not need less activity. They need higher level engagement.

If your child gets bored fast the question is not how do you slow them down. It is what are you giving them that is actually worth their time.

If you’ve been noticing this at home, try swapping out passive entertainment for a real hands-on project this week and watch how quickly their focus increases.

Before thermal cameras and heat sensors existed, firefighters had to read a scene using nothing but their eyes and their training.

They still do.

The color of smoke tells them how hot a fire is burning. Dark black smoke means something synthetic is burning at high heat. Light grey or white smoke usually means water or steam is present. Yellow or brown smoke signals chemicals or building materials.

The movement tells them where the fire is and where it is headed.

When smoke is being pulled toward a door or crack it means fresh air is getting sucked in from that direction to feed the fire. Think of it like the fire is breathing in.

When smoke is pushing outward and billowing away from the building it means the fire has built up so much heat and pressure that it is forcing everything out. Think of it like the fire is breathing out.

Reading those two things together tells a firefighter where the fire is strongest and which way it is likely to spread next. All in under 30 seconds.

That is pattern recognition, critical thinking and split second problem solving under pressure not just bravery

Here’s what they will actually learn on it:

“Kids don’t have the attention span for that.”

We hear this a lot.

Then we put a robot in front of them and give them one challenge.

They start testing code, figuring out why the robot went the wrong way, calling a friend over to look at what they did, and trying something completely different, and somehow three hours have passed and nobody asked to leave 😂

That is what happens when a curious kid finds something worth figuring out.

Learning does not feel like learning anymore. It just feels like the best Saturday they have had in a while.

That is what we build at Code and Play every 1st and 3rd Saturday in Lafayette.

While I didn't walk away with the prize, I walked away with meaningful connections, incredible feedback, and exciting opportunities to explore.

Today, I take the stage. 🧡

What started as a vision to make computer science accessible, engaging, and FUN for children has grown into something beyond what I imagined.

Today, I have the honor of pitching Code+Play at the curateforwomen Pitch Competition in New Orleans!

Building a business while balancing a career, a family, and everything in between has been quite the journey.

And we're just getting started. There's so much more I envision for Code+Play, and I'm excited to share a little piece of that vision today.
