Good afternoon!

It was a good short week in band. We had one written assignment on the eLearning day, Wednesday, called “Music Theory: Identify 5 Notes”. Mr. Eddy is working through a list of students who appear to be struggling to do their band written assignments. If your child has any zeros in band class, they can make up their grade by submitting their completed work prior to the end of the quarter. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if your child does not understand how to submit their band assignments.

Next week, we will have 5 daily music minute assignments due on Friday. These are one-question quizzes that can be found on the Band Canvas homepage. They take less than one minute to complete, and they have unlimited attempts with correct answers given after each attempt. The assignments are called DMM 5b, DMM 5c, DMM 6a, DMM 6b, and DMM 6c.

Over the weekend, we hope that students will take at least 15 minutes to practice their concert music. We are in full swing learning the notes, rhythms, and harmonies of the music we will perform for you in October (Oct. 14, 6pm, Sunnyside door 13). It is such a cool journey they are on, and we can’t wait to share it.

This marked the first week of daily music minutes for our students in band class. The assignments are posted one per day and they are all due on Friday of the week in which they are assigned. If a student does not complete the assignments, you will see a zero in the grade book early the following week. However, every assignment in band class is eligible to be made up for full credit before the end of the quarter, as we hope for this to be a transition into the junior high workload.

Students also prepared for and took their first playing test this week. We are proud of everyone for their determination to achieve their fullest potential on this test. Students who earned lower than 70% will be required to do a re-take next week. We will be targeting their area of need and working to help them improve their skill for the retake. Practicing at home is the number one determining factor of success when learning a new musical instrument. Make sure your child has a space to play and is given the permission to add 10-15 minutes of instrument practice to their homework routine.

There will be no music minutes next week because of the short week and eLearning day. We will have one assignment for students on eLearning day. It is called “Music Theory: Identify 5 Notes” and it is very similar to the music theory assignment they completed last week. The expectation is that they will complete the eLearning assignment while they are home on Wednesday. Mr. Eddy and I will be checking email throughout the day, and your child may email us if they need assistance.

I am looking forward to watching the Lafayette Citizen’s Band perform their final concert of the season at the Columbian Park Stage on Monday evening. Students who have a permission slip on file with me should plan to meet me at Sunnyside door 12 at 6:15pm for the walk to the park. I will send a remind message when we are on our way back to the school. Plan for pick up to be approximately 8pm. This concert is free and open to the public. However, only students who have returned the permission slip should meet me at Sunnyside for the event. I will send a follow up email to those families for confirmation by the end of the day today (Friday).

Finally, we are all looking forward to performing our own concert right here at Sunnyside on the evening of Wednesday, October 14th at 6pm. Families should plan to arrive in the parking lot off of Cason Street by 5:30pm so that students can be seated and ready to play their warmup at 5:45. Door 12 is the closest for students to get to the band room, and door 13 is the closest for families to get in to the auditorium to take their seats for the performance. The concert will last approximately 30 minutes, and it is a required event. Students should plan to wear their Broncho Music polo shirts that will be passed out to them at least one week prior to the concert, along with tan khaki pants, shorts, or skirt. Shorts and skirts need to meet school attire expectations for length.

It has been a week of rapid growth for our beginning musicians! The Eddy group (summer start students) have been working on ensemble playing with an arrangement of Jingle Bells! It is never too soon for the winter holiday tunes, right? The Boyer group (fall start students) have been working toward learning new rhythms and pitches (quarter notes, and the fourth and fifth pitches of our major scale). The pace and fluency have increased for all of our musicians considerably this week. It is important for students to self-assess their progress and determine what to play when they practice at home. Self-assessment and self-reflection happen daily in band class so that students can learn to be their own teachers in their home practice sessions. Encourage your child to practice something from their book that they played in band this week.

Assignments:
The music theory assignment was due today. Remember that we accept late work for full credit until the last week of the quarter. Starting next week, daily music minutes will be due at the end of each week. These one-question quizzes can be found on the band canvas homepage in the assignment calendar. Students may work ahead if they would like, and there are unlimited attempts for each question. Additionally, we will have our first playing test on Thursday next week over exercise 25 in the red band method book (also found on canvas).

Optional Outing:
Students were given a permission slip for the optional Labor Day outing to watch the final concert of the season for the Lafayette Citizen’s Band. The information and permission slip are attached to the emailed announcements. You can also complete the form online at the following link, also included in the emailed announcements. Notice that this is an event that is optional and takes place in the evening on a day that school is not in session.

Today is the deadline for shirt orders. However, we can accept orders on Monday from students who forgot to bring them in today. I will send an email to the families of students who I believe have not ordered a shirt after school today. If you do not plan to order a shirt, you can disregard the email.

If you still need to order your shirt, you can do so online via the link included in the email.

Next week will be the start of our first written homework assignment of the school year called “Music Theory: Identify 3 Notes”. It is an online flash card sort of assignment, and students will be shown how to complete it and turn it in next week by Friday. It should be a fun way to reinforce the music reading progress the students have made so far.

I will also be sending home an invitation and permission slip next week for our annual Labor Day outing the is an optional opportunity for students to walk with me to the park to watch the Lafayette Citizen’s Band. Stay tuned for more information regarding that event including an invitation for parents to chaperone.

Good evening!

We made it through the first full week! Students at this point should be accustomed to bringing their materials to school back and forth each day for band class. Most everyone is doing a great job with this, and we appreciate your support from home!

The Broncho Music Polo Shirt order form is due next Friday. You can order by sending in the form that was sent home this week with your child, or you can order online using the link included in the email.

Students who are in both choir and band only need one shirt that they can use for both groups.

Also included in the email is the schedule of events for the 26-27 school year. Thank you for involving your child in music! Have a great weekend!

Good afternoon!

What a great two days so far!! I will be sending weekly announcements on Fridays via email with all of the important information you will need. Announcements will also be distributed to you via Remind Service once you are signed up for our class, it will be posted on our page, and on the Canvas home page. I will be sending a remind invitation to you next week, but if you would like to beat me to it, you can enroll for our remind service by following the instructions on the essential information packet that was given to students in class today and is attached in the email.

Our only Golden Rule so far has been to “Bring Your Stuff, Take Home Your Stuff”. Students should plan to bring their instrument to school every day that they have band class (if it is one that will be taken back and forth - not the ones that have a class and home set).

The most important parts of the Essential Information Packet are the schedule of events and the polo shirt order form (attached separately in the email).

Schedule of Events
Because we are a co-curricular class, attendance at the concerts is counted for a grade. Please make sure you put the schedule into your home calendar. There is one typo on the packet. The May 4th concert is at 6pm, not 7pm.

Polo Shirt
If you do not already have a Broncho Music Polo shirt for your child, you should order it by August 21 (2 weeks from today). You can order online with credit card, or via paper slip with cash or check.

We send weekly announcements to keep you informed, but mostly to open a line of communication for you. Never hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns. We are so excited to be embarking on this first full year of study with your child in music!
