As the snow starts falling in the mountains it becomes a difficult time of year for me as the mother of George Dirth who lost his life in an avalanche on New Years Eve in 2013. The 2013-14 season had 35 fatalities. The season of the covid shutdown had the highest ever fatalities at 37 due to unskilled people going into the backcountry.

The year after George's death I started a scholarship fund in his name to provide assistance for people who want to venture out in the backcountry but have not yet educated themselves as to the risks. This fund depends entirely on donations from backcountry users and providers who want to make the sport safer for all.

Help me help uneducated backcountry users get their AIARE level 1 education. All funds raised go to scholarships. All fundraising and operations are volunteer. Colorado Gives focuses their fundraising on Colorado based non-profits. Please consider donating here:

We only have 3 more days to help people get educated to be safe in the backcountry. Please consider donating because every little bit helps and we are almost $1000 shy of our goal for this year. Through helping people to get educated the life you save may be your own. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/23Mp7w7Tzc1Xm1Rz/
