A poster once shared this image to show his displeasure of my view that most electric bass players are unqualified to teach.

A qualified teacher takes charge of your education. They give you what you need, not just what you want. What students want is often secondary because it is rarely the same as what will help them grow.

I don’t claim to be right. But every capable classical teacher knowledgeable in music and instrument have consistently produced more capable players than electric bass teachers have. The reason is simple: in the classical world, music always comes first. They are right! The whole industry of classical instruction is right! This is why I use them as an example of successful teachers.

So, my advice is this: seek teachers of music. Not classical music either but jazz and harmonic studies!. Don’t insist on shaping the lessons to your preference. If you love bass, and if you love music, that love will only grow deeper under real guidance.
