It’s count day! The Great Southeast Pollinator Census is happening today and tomorrow, August 21–22, and we need your help putting Alabama’s pollinators on the map.

Getting involved is easy—and it only takes 15 minutes:
• Print your counting sheet.
• Find a pollinator-friendly plant.
• Watch for 15 minutes.
• Record the insects that land.
• Upload your count.

Whether you count in your backyard, garden, schoolyard or community, your observations become part of a larger scientific effort to better understand and conserve pollinators across the Southeast.

People of all ages can participate, so grab your family, coworkers, classmates or friends and head outside. Even Aubie is counting—will you join him?

Learn more about the count here: https://www.aces.edu/go/GreatSoutheastPollinatorCensus

Service is at the heart of the Alabama Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Program. Through a network of Extension agents and trained volunteers, the program is an active partner across Alabama — devoting time and expertise to improving communities and helping residents flourish in their gardening journeys. People now have a new way of supporting the work of Alabama Extension Master Gardeners by becoming members of the Branch and Bloom Society. This society recognizes those who financially contribute to the program’s endowed fund for excellence. A donation of $20 or more automatically enrolls someone as a society member.

“Our volunteers are proud to call themselves Master Gardeners,” said Kerry Smith, program coordinator. “With the Branch and Bloom Society, we are adding a new level of recognition to the program, where our supporters also have a way to proudly show their dedication and investment into Alabama Extension Master Gardeners.”

Hot weather can be hard on backyard chickens, and keeping plenty of fresh, cool, clean water available is one of the simplest ways to help your flock handle the heat.

Are you interested in learning more about having your own backyard flock? Or maybe you are a homesteading pro and need guidance? Alabama Extension has science-based resources for small and backyard flock owners covering everything from feeding and brooding chicks to egg production, flock health, biosecurity and everyday management.
