Newlyweds Donna and Daniel McWilliams were selected as Lafayette Garden Club’s October Garden of the Month. Their lovely home at 300 Heatheroak Avenue is in full bloom with blue plumbago stealing the show and several palms adding a tropical oasis vibe. Annuals as well as perennials add lushness and bold color through out the garden in beds, borders and pots. Congratulations are in order for this stunning display as well as their newlywed status!

Congratulations to the Oil Center Home Bank branch located at 1020 Coolidge Street, for receiving the Lafayette Garden Club’s October 2026 Civic Pride Award. The bank’s attractive, white brick mid-century modern design is set off by tall sparkling plate glass windows which provide a soft sunlit interior. The building is set off by a cheery landscape design containing an abundance of colorful periwinkles and drift roses and highlighted by yellow sunshine ligustrums. Landscaping credit can be given to The Cutting Edge Lawn Care Services of Lafayette.

Fall is a great time to remove unwanted vines. Some vines provide food and shelter for wildlife, but aggressive growth can quickly take over trees, shrubs, fences and other landscape features.

Annual vines, such as morning glory, can often be pulled up by hand, roots and all. Perennial woody vines are more stubborn and may require additional control measures to prevent them from returning. You can read more about how to remove certain vines here: https://tinyurl.com/2kw2vmbt

If you love Louisiana irises—or have been thinking about adding some to your garden—mark your calendar for the Greater New Orleans Iris Society’s (GNOIS) Annual Louisiana Iris Rhizome Sale at Longue Vue House & Gardens!

There no entrance fee to Longue Vue if you are attending the iris sale.

This is GNOIS’s big fall bare-root iris sale, and this year the Society says there will be hundreds of irises available representing 100 varieties. The irises come primarily from the Society’s Island Iris Nursery in New Orleans City Park, which contains more than 500 varieties of Louisiana irises.

Past GNOIS sales at Longue Vue have offered an opportunity to find both well-known favorites and unusual Louisiana iris cultivars that can be difficult to find elsewhere.

The Society has noted that fall is an especially good time to plant bare-root Louisiana irises, giving them time to establish their roots before the next bloom season.

And there is an added bonus to shopping irises at Longue Vue!The sale is held outdoors behind the house, not too far from the Wild Garden, so take a few minutes to walk through this remarkable historic garden that has a Louisiana iris collection while you're there.

Longue Vue's Wild Garden contains what the garden describes as the oldest consistently maintained Louisiana iris collection in the greater New Orleans area. The collection dates back to the late 1930s and includes all five Louisiana iris species, historic cultivars and naturally occurring hybrids. Today, more than 3,500 iris plants grow along the winding path through the garden.

The Wild Garden also has a special connection to Caroline Dormon, the legendary Louisiana conservationist, botanist, writer and artist. Dormon worked with the Stern family at Longue Vue beginning in 1947, helping steward its native plant and Louisiana iris collections. Several Dormon-hybridized Louisiana irises remain in the collection today.

Although the irises will not be blooming until April, you can attend the iris sale, enjoy the Wild Garden, and leave with some new Louisiana iris treasures for your own garden!

American beautyberry, also referred to as French mulberry, Callicarpa americana, is showcasing deep purple berries this time of year! This native, deciduous, perennial shrub is an LSU AgCenter Super Plant. This shrub is perfect for attracting wildlife to the landscape while offering a marvelous pop of color in the fall.

Beautyberry requires little maintenance and can grow in full sun to part shade. The best time to plant this shrub is in the fall and winter. Lafayette Garden Club members Julie Anna Ousse, Becky Latolais, Dean Koppfler, Denise Lanclos, Mary Louise Lamm and Connie Byrne manned the display table at the Lafayette Parish Master Gardener Plantfest fundraiser. This event is a wonderful opportunity to discuss the garden club and its activities to the public.

Here are a few pictures from this morning's planting at the Miles Perret Cancer Services Center. Those helping were: Linda Beyt, Becky Latiolais, Sue Stoltz, Connie Byrne, Marsha and Lawrence Trahan, Annette Stelly, Dean Koeffler, Kathy Leblanc and Becky Lege.
We planted ShiShi Sasanqua, Encore Azaleas, Drift roses, Peggy Martin rose, Pink Bleeding Heart, and foxtail ferns- all in shades of pink for Breast Cancer month in October. The Sacred Heart of Jesus statue was installed on a pedestal so that He and the garden are visible from the picture window of the chapel.
