📚 Spotlight on ELA Across Our Parish! 🌟

Whoa! We are blown away that it is only September and we have so much to share! From bringing stories off the page to hitting major literacy milestones, our teachers and students have been hard at work! Check out all the incredible ways our schools are bringing Knowledge units to life, keeping Skills lessons hands-on, celebrating LEXIA growth, and making every minute of small group time count:

🥞 Bringing Knowledge Units to Life
Paul Bunyan Flapjacks: Students at Live Oak, Middlebrook, Alice Boucher, and Green T. Lindon enjoyed a classic flapjack treat while diving into Tall Tales!

5th Grade Mayan Civilization & 3rd Grade Disguising Mr. Toad: J. Wallace James scholars explored ancient Mayan history and got creative disguising Mr. Toad from The Wind in the Willows.

4th Grade Medieval Unit: Ossun students stepped back into the Middle Ages.

2nd Grade Ancient Civilizations: J.W. Faulk learners traveled back in time to study early history.

2nd Grade Fairy Tales & 4th Grade Personal Narratives: Ridge celebrated reading with fairy tale fun and enjoyed "Milkshakes & Personal Narratives" writing celebrations!

Nursery Rhyme & Fable Olympics: Prairie Kindergartners tackled the Nursery Rhyme Olympics, while Middlebrook 1st graders hosted their very own Fable Olympics.

Hands-on Rhyme Activities: L. Leo Kindergartners raced in a Humpty Dumpty egg race and whipped up Spider Cookies for Little Miss Muffet!

✏️ Hands-on Skills, Writing & Phonics in Action
Interactive Literacy Tools: Green T. Lindon K–2 classrooms utilized Flippity on interactive displays, and Evangeline Kindergarten practiced segmenting words with Elkonin boxes.

Foundational Word & Syllable Games: Middlebrook Kindergartners played "Duck, Duck, Syllable," while Carencro Bob Lilly showcased fantastic handwriting across 5th Grade and Kindergarten!

Sensory Details & Sequencing: Woodvale 5th graders built 3D sensory detail models, and Middlebrook 5th graders practiced sequencing key event cards.

Essay Writing Milestones: Baranco and Evangeline 3rd graders focused on crafting and publishing their essays.

Lexia Superstars: Big congratulations to students at J.W. Faulk and Alice Boucher for leveling up and earning their Lexia Superstar certificates!

Million-Word Readers: Celebrating our dedicated administrators and teachers at Burke and Alice Boucher who reached Million-Word Reader status!

📖 Targeted Small Group & Partner Practice
Partner Reading: Middlebrook 1st graders teamed up for focused partner reading time to build fluency and comprehension.

During PLCs today at Lafayette Elementary, the principal shared with us a vintage teacher’s manual copyright 1877 that was gifted to her - and our ELA team couldn’t help but get a kick out of it!

Take a look at the instruction under Phonetics:

“Words to be analyzed by sounds; names of the sounds to be stated; faults of enunciation to be corrected."

No trendy jargon, no overcomplicating things—just simple, explicit phonics instruction. Nearly 150 years later, the Science of Reading reminds us of what educators in 1877 already knew: teaching kids to break down sounds works! 🔤📚

Some things change, but the fundamentals of how brains learn to read stay the same.

Big news from our ELA team! 🍼🩵 We are thrilled to celebrate the arrival of a beautiful baby boy with our newest K-5 ELA Coach, Paige Gossen! Mama and baby are doing well, and we couldn't be happier for her growing family.

She will be spending the next few weeks snuggling her little one and will return to support our schools after Fall Break. In the meantime, our department is down a team member! We appreciate your patience and grace as the rest of our team steps up to support all of our K-5 schools. Please continue to reach out, and we’ll be with you as quickly as possible.

Love seeing explicit phonics instruction in action! 🐾📖

Mrs. Alicia’s class at Green T. Lindon Elementary has been using digital blending boards (like Flippity!) to practice letter sounds and build up their nonsense word fluency. Interactive tools like this make multisensory blending practice engaging, hands-on, and easy to set up for K–3 routines.

We encourage all of our classrooms to leverage Flippity for quick, dynamic phonics centers! Fantastic work, Cubs! 🐾💚
