Dr. James Blair is an adjunct instructor who teaches Theories of Counseling to our graduate students during their first semester. He makes an impact on these students that stays with them throughout their professional journey.

His way of providing demonstrations for students who are just beginning and immersing them in the client’s seat holds true to his message: “teach me what it’s like to be you”. It was no surprise that internship and practicum students wanted to experience his live demonstrations, meaningful words of encouragement, and presence once more during staffing.

Our program encourages future counselors to provide care for clients inside and outside of the session.

In August, these students volunteered their time for Healing House- an organization providing support for grieving children in the Acadiana community. These students assisted with setting up the Martini Gala the organization hosted.

The UL Counseling Department was proudly represented at the 2026 American School Counselor Association Conference in New Orleans by Dr. Pool, current student Julia Sepcich, alumni Deb Hill, Briana Clay, and Hayley Smith, and site supervisors Stephanie Helms (alumni) and Sara Beth Martin.

Congratulations to Dr. Pool and Deb Hill for presenting a session on grief to approximately 300 attendees, and to alumni and Briana Clay from the non-profit ROX (Ruling our Experiences) for speaking at the organization's reception.
