Susie Haines asked me to post this. It seems that most people cannot post on this group anymore, and I'm not sure why.

Hi All - I have sad news to report. John Rhoad passed away this morning - September 26 - in Alexandria. So far there are not many details but we do know there will be a small service next Tuesday October 3.

Update: The services will be at 11 am, at Kramer Funeral Home, with visitation starting at 9 that same morning. Obit:

From Stephanie: Last week there was a strong outpouring of love for the Payne family however they could use continued support in the weeks to come. If you haven't had the opportunity to buy a card, or write a letter for this week, consider saving a date for the future. Hello, Stephanie (McGee) Mays, Marshall High Band, class of 1987. I am emailing you from a mailing for his Surprise Retirement Party (SRP).

Sadly, it is believed that he is actively passing from this world to the next. I wanted as many of his former students to know in case they wanted to pray or think positive thoughts for him and his family while he is still among us.

We are all special and like family. BUT, PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FLOOD HIS FAMILY WITH CALLS AND TEXTS AT THIS TIME.

The Scholarship in Honor of Dr. Jerry Payne has all of the paperwork lined up. It will have a minimum of 10,000 dollars needed to start the distribution of scholarships to freshman instrumental music education major with a 3.0 or higher grade point average and an acceptable standard of musicianship per the music department of NSU. One scholarship per year will be awarded unless or until we fund it well enough to award others. It will be listed in NSU foundation literature very soon and in various news outlets in the draw areas of NSU.Thee will be more information available as well as ample opportunity for donations to be made at the reunion events on July 1-2 coming up. For those who may not have heard this news, we are as a group creating a scholarship for a deserving music education student at Northwestern State University in Honor of Dr Jerry Payne,. I will be meeting with the NSU foundation next Tuesday to iron out the details. The more word of mouth spreading of this news the better and faster we will be able to actually bestow the scholarships on deserving students . The benchmark for allowing distribution is $10,000. Anyone who was ever a student of Doc Payne needs to be told of this meaningful way to honor our mentor, teacher and friend. Pass this word along to anyone you know.
