Dear Friends and colleagues:
I'm writing to you just outside the evacuation zone of the Eaton fire, where the ashes of my friends' homes in Altadena fall heavy through the smoky air.
I'm a member of the Suzuki Association of the Americas, and currently volunteer on the board of the Suzuki Music Association of California as the director of the Los Angeles Branch.
Several of my SMAC-LA colleagues lost homes and instruments in the fires this week, and in order to continue their financial recovery, must replace those instruments to continue teaching.
Many students of local teachers also lost homes, schools, and instruments this week. I've arranged with local instrument dealers to supply pianos, plus string and band instruments to these teachers and students.
As the leader of the LA Branch, I'm coordinating a fundraiser for my chapter of SMAC to help fund interim, rental, or replacement instruments for our Los Angeles Suzuki teachers and students. Both GoFundMe and SMAC-LA are non-profits, so your donations are tax-deductible.
As soon as the funds are raised, we can direct aid in the form of instruments to our colleagues while they wade through the difficulty of insurance claims for a more permanent solution - but this will get instruments in their hands ASAP. We will also help rent studio teaching space for our teachers who have lost home studios. It will also help get instruments back into the hands of the kids who wish to continue their music lessons.
