Today we honor the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of the brave service members who were wounded or gave their lives in service to our nation. On Purple Heart Day, we remember their unwavering commitment and express our deepest gratitude.

Today we wear red for a different reason. The poppy's significance comes from the harsh landscapes of World War I. The soil across war-torn battlefields in France and Belgium became heavily enriched with lime from the rubble, causing bright red poppies to flourish amidst the destruction. Wear a red poppy today in honor of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for you and your freedoms, and never forget them.

On Friday our office and members of the Student Veterans Organization of UL Lafayette participated in planting a tree in honor of Jim Bollich, arguably one of the most heroic, bravest and toughest men alive. Jim visited with our Student Vets at one of our weekly Coffee Hours a few years ago to tell stories and share his experience. Truly an honor.

Join us Friday, March 27 at 3 p.m. as the University of Louisiana at Lafayette plants a live oak on its Health Sciences Campus along St. Julien Avenue in observance of the nation’s 250th anniversary.
The tree will honor Lafayette resident and World War II veteran James “Jim” Bollich — a 104-year-old survivor of the Bataan Death March, recipient of the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Congressional Gold Medal, and a 1949 alumnus of SLI. Read more about Bollich at https://bit.ly/4rXpbmI.
Part of Lafayette’s 250 Acts of Pride or Service and the nationwide America250 effort, the event will include State Rep. Mike Bayham, Mayor-President Monique B. Boulet and University leadership. The live oak is donated by Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain.
We hope you’ll join us!
