Blow those grass clippings into your yard for free fertilizer! Keep the sidewalks and streets safe for cyclists! Those clippings will clog your storm drain, and we don't want that.

PSA!
Think that “pretty landscaping plant” at the garden center is harmless? Some of Indiana’s worst invasive species started exactly that way.
The Indiana Terrestrial Plant Rule was created to help stop invasive plants before they spread into our woods, waterways, parks, and even our own backyards. Since 2020, it has been illegal in Indiana to sell, gift, transport, or intentionally distribute 44 regulated invasive plant species without a permit including familiar problem plants like Dame's rocket, Japanese barberry, wintercreeper, bush honeysuckle, and Japanese knotweed.
Why does this matter? Because invasive plants don’t stay where they’re planted. They spread aggressively, crowd out native wildflowers and trees, reduce wildlife habitat, damage ecosystems, and cost Indiana landowners and land managers millions of dollars every year to control.
The good news: homeowners can be part of the solution. Learning how to identify invasive plants is one of the most powerful first steps you can take for your property and your local environment.

This guide, A Guide to the Regulated Terrestrial Invasive Plant Species of Indiana, was created through a collaborative effort between the Indiana Invasive Species Council, The Nature Conservancy in Indiana, and the Indiana Native Plant Society. It covers 49 regulated invasive plants in Indiana with photos, identification tips, and even comparisons to similar native species so you can confidently tell the difference.
Before you plant this spring or summer, take a second look at what’s growing in your yard. Small choices by homeowners can make a huge difference for Indiana’s forests, pollinators, and wildlife.
