"Hi everyone! My name is Areli Mendieta-Santos, and I am an upcoming senior at Purdue University. I am majoring in Developmental and Family Science with concentrations in Child Development and Family & Community Health. I am also pursuing two minors; one is in Spanish and the other is in Latin American & Latino Studies. During my free time I enjoy thrifting, coffee tasting, and spending time with my family and friends. I may look familiar, as I am a returning intern! This is my second summer as a 4-H Intern with Purdue Extension and I am extremely grateful for another summer to continue growing, developing new skills, and expanding my experience. I’m excited for another summer of meaningful work supporting youth and their families!"

Join Purdue Extension for the 2026 Crop & Soil Science Workshop on June 16 from 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. at the Purdue University Crop Diagnostic Training & Research Center in West Lafayette. Lunch is provided!

Youth in grades 3–12 will explore interactive activities like:
🌽 Corn & soybean growth stages
🪱 Soil pits and soil health demonstrations
🚁 High-tech agriculture with sensors & drones
🐞 Scouting insects in forage fields
🌾 Grain storage safety
🧪 Understanding pesticide labels & protective equipment
🔍 Agronomic scavenger hunt
🌱 Proper soil sampling and fertilizer recommendations

"Hey 4-H family and friends! My name is Lane Shepard, and I am very excited to be returning as a 4-H intern this year! I will be a senior at Huntington University this fall, where I am majoring in Business Marketing and Management. I enjoy working with different social media platforms and marketing, as well as connecting with youth through our 4-H programs. I am really looking forward to being back and getting the chance to connect with a lot of new people. A few fun facts about me are that I am absolutely obsessed with miniature dachshunds, I can never turn down a good cup of coffee, and I love learning new things! If you see me around, come say hello! I am looking forward to a great summer and cannot wait to see everyone at the fair!"

"Hi everyone! My name is Makenzee Smith, and I am entering my senior year at Purdue University, where I study Animal Sciences with a concentration in Animal Production and Industry. I am passionate about animal agriculture, youth development, and educating others about food production. In my free time, I enjoy reading, spending time outdoors, and spending quality time with friends and family. I am excited for this internship because it will allow me to gain valuable hands-on experience working with youth and communities while continuing to grow personally and professionally."

🌙🔦 Discover the hidden world of insects after dark!

Join Purdue Entomology and local partners for Insects in a New Light — a FREE evening program exploring nocturnal insects through black lighting technology.

Participants will learn about:
🔍 Insect diversity
💡 How black lighting works
📱 Using iNaturalist to contribute to community science

Then, head outside to experience black lighting stations and see what insects appear after sunset!

This is a fun opportunity for youth, families, Master Gardeners, Master Naturalists, and anyone curious about the natural world.
