Some people leave a mark on your life that lasts long after you walk across the graduation stage.

For Dr. Jay Guillory, Carencro High School was the place where he first learned the power of believing in himself.

As a Bear, Jay stayed involved in every aspect of student life, participating in Band, Student Council, Link Crew, and AOIT. Whether he was serving others, building connections, or creating memories with classmates, those experiences helped shape the leader he would become.

When reflecting on the people who made the biggest impact on his journey, one name stands above the rest: Mr. Joey Mouton.

More than a counselor, Mr. Mouton was one of the first people to truly see Jay’s potential before he could fully see it himself. Through his encouragement, guidance, and unwavering belief, he helped Jay realize that higher education wasn’t just possible—it was something he deserved to pursue.

That support changed the trajectory of his life.
Today, Dr. Guillory serves in Postsecondary and Workforce Success Programs, helping others discover opportunities and build futures of their own. His work reflects the same belief that was poured into him years ago at Carencro: that when someone believes in you, anything becomes possible.
One of Jay’s favorite memories from his time at Carencro was the legendary senior prank—a memory that still brings a smile to his face whenever he thinks back on his high school years.

His advice for current students:
“Always bet on yourself, even when the odds don’t make sense to anyone else. Believe in your dreams before there’s evidence they’ll happen. Bet on yourself loudly, consistently, and unapologetically.”

When asked to finish the sentence, “Carencro built me by…”, Jay answered:

“Reminding me that where you come from can be both your foundation and your fuel.”

One Standard. One Culture. One Carencro.

Some people leave Carencro with memories. Others leave with a sense of purpose.

For China Boutte, Carencro High was the place where she learned to lead, serve, and step confidently into who she was becoming.

Whether she was serving as Student Council President, leading as Dazzler Captain, or earning the distinction of Carencro High’s 2025 Student of the Year, China embraced every opportunity to make a difference and invest in those around her.

She credits Mr. Seth Dickerson—a fellow Carencro alum—as one of the people who had the greatest impact on her journey. More than a teacher, he became a mentor who challenged her to step outside her comfort zone, take chances, and believe in herself even during moments of doubt.

As she begins her next chapter at Louisiana State University, where she will study Mathematics with a concentration in Secondary Education, China hopes to one day have the same impact on students that her teachers had on her.

Her advice to current students:

“You never know when your story, your struggles, or your growth could help change someone else’s life.”

When asked to finish the sentence, “Carencro built me by…” China shared:

“Surrounding me with people who pushed me to grow, believed in me when I doubted myself, and taught me the importance of hard work, community, and giving back to others.”

One Standard. One Culture. One Carencro.
