Nightfall at Filoli// For the 2nd year in a row, we stepped into the magic of Nightfall at Filoli, & it has quickly become one of our favorite fall experiences! As the sun goes down, the beautiful Filoli estate transforms into an immersive Halloween adventure filled with glowing jack-o’-lanterns, mysterious woodland trails, towering scarecrows, live music, festive activities & just the right amount of spooky.

The adventure begins inside the Historic House, transformed by a mysterious witch’s curse with spooky surprises waiting around every corner. From there, we made our way to The Meadow, where thousands of pumpkins, games, live music, seasonal food & drinks set the scene for a festive harvest celebration. Then it was off to explore the Redwood trails, where the path comes alive with 1,000 glowing jack-o’-lanterns, enchanted trees, giant slugs, eerie scarecrows & whimsical woodland installations, eventually leading into the magical Witches’ Village with so many new additions.

With live music, interactive characters, games, glowing trails & endless fall photo opportunities woven throughout the estate, Nightfall feels like stepping straight into a Halloween story. We loved experiencing the magic & seeing how Filoli continues to add new surprises while keeping so many of the elements we loved from our first visit.

Nightfall @ Filoli runs now–11/ 1 & is open 5:30–10:00 PM, with the last entry at 8:30 PM. Recommend allowing approximately 2–2.5 hours to experience the full journey.

Nightfall is family-friendly, although some areas are dark & intentionally spooky. Comfortable shoes & an extra layer for the cool evenings in the Redwoods are definitely a good idea!

Pumpkin Decorating Party// Pumpkin decorating is one of my favorite ways to celebrate the magic of fall! For this festive invitation, each child had their own pumpkin to transform with an abundance of colorful, sparkly & spooky loose parts. Rather than providing a design to copy, the experience was completely open-ended, giving children the freedom to experiment, make choices & create a pumpkin uniquely their own.

The Tinker Trays were filled with Discount School Supply Colorations Halloween foam shapes, adhesive & sparkly pom-poms, sequins, small & large adhesive rhinestones, iridescent gems, wooden mosaic tiles, colorful craft sticks, wooden shapes, adhesive googly eyes, gem stickers, glitter glue & sparkly & regular pipe cleaners. I also provided tempera paint sticks, acrylic paint markers, scissors, fast-drying tacky glue & a hot glue gun with adult assistance.

With pumpkins as their canvas, children could draw, layer, arrange, glue & redesign as their ideas evolved. Beyond being a festive fall tradition, this invitation naturally encouraged fine-motor development, hand-eye coordination, creative thinking, decision-making, patterning & self-expression.

No templates. No two pumpkins alike. Just an abundance of materials & endless possibilities to tinker, create & make a little Halloween magic!

Magical Potions, Concoctions & Elixirs Birthday Party Station//When the birthday girl has a creative vision, you let the magic begin! For this magical celebration, she knew exactly what she wanted: a party where her crew could mix, pour, scoop, stir & create their own magical potions, concoctions & elixirs. I loved transforming her idea into an immersive potion-making experience filled with color, sparkle, mysterious ingredients & endless opportunities to experiment.

The table became a whimsical Potion Laboratory, layered with bubbling brews, colorful liquids, dried botanicals, crystals, gems & all kinds of interesting vessels & tools. The setup included witches’ cauldrons galore, TTS Resources potion bottles, test tubes, graduated cylinders, beakers, large beverage dispensers, pipettes, syringes, ladles, wooden spoons, mini pitchers, Yellow Door, Early Years Educational Resources rustic bowls & pourers, dried flowers & herbs, fizzing tablets, crystals & gems. The vibrant potions were created using Colorations BioColor® Paint in fluorescent & metallic shades mixed with water, adding even more color & magic to the experience.

Rather than following a specific recipe, the experience was completely open-ended. Children could move along the table, choose whatever ingredients intrigued them, experiment with different combinations & imagine what their potion might do!plenty of opportunities to explore, experiment & make a little magic of their own.

While designed to feel magical & FUN, learning was naturally woven throughout. Scooping, pouring, measuring & mixing encouraged fine-motor skills, early math & science, problem-solving & experimentation, while giving children the freedom to wonder, explore & imagine.

A special shoutout to Party Girl Company / Bay Area Balloons for the amazing balloons that created the perfect backdrop for the photo booth & jumpy house & most of all, to the incredible mama who brought every detail together to make her birthday girl’s magical vision come to life!

👻 A peek inside our day at Goblin Jamboree! 🎃

We headed to Bay Area Discovery Museum for one of our favorite Halloween traditions, & the spooky fun started before we even walked through the doors! We were greeted by Bitsy, the museum’s HUGE new eight-legged visitor towering over the entrance 🕷️, the perfect way to set the scene for a day filled with Halloween magic!

Here’s some of the magic we experienced:
🕷️ Braved a walk underneath Bitsy
🪲 Got up close with Beetlelady + her fascinating bugs
🕸️ Spun around Los Trompos, wrapped in spooky spiderwebs
🧪 Mixed up magical concoctions at Goblin Brew
🪳 Unearthed creepy crawlies at Big Dig
👹 Created our own imaginative monsters at Build a Beast

From potion-making & creepy-crawly discoveries to art, sensory play & imaginative adventures, there was Halloween magic waiting around every corner. Such a fun day celebrating one of our favorite traditions at our favorite place ever! 👻✨

Goblin Jamboree is happening weekends October 3–31, so there’s still plenty of time to bring your little goblins & experience it for yourselves!

Fall Foliage Invitations to Explore, Create & Play// As leaves transform into brilliant shades of red, orange, yellow & brown, the fall season provides endless opportunities for children to observe, explore, investigate, & create through play.

Over the years, I’ve used fall foliage as inspiration for open-ended experiences that bring nature into our learning environments. From painting & play dough to sensory exploration, fine motor play & small worlds, leaves offer such a simple & beautiful way to encourage children to slow down, notice seasonal changes & explore the natural world around them.

So gather a collection of colorful leaves & see where the children’s curiosity takes them. Sometimes the most meaningful invitations begin with the simplest treasures found right outside our door.
