As we finished up our study on the U.S., we learned that the Sioux Native Americans made coup sticks to tell their stories. Since they didn’t have written language of their own, they would use pictures and hang them from sticks.
Students made their own version of a coup stick telling various stories about their lives, then shared their stories with the class. 💚

Once a month, our classroom moves to the library — new books, new adventures, same love of play and exploration. 💚📚

Students enjoyed a break from the classroom today with a field trip to Twin's Burgers and Sweets. They were given a tour by Mr. Billy, who explained the process of baking their famous gingerbread cookies from start to finish. Students then got to decorate their own gingerbread cookies, and afterwards, we all enjoyed a tasty lunch together. Life is better with food and friends. 💚

We are back at it!

Something we believe deeply is that classrooms should be built around developmentally appropriate practices. Our first graders still get centers and playtime. At that age, they are still learning how to engage with each other during play. This means navigating conflict and frustration as well as excitement. A teacher is always close by, listening and assisting them in expressing feelings appropriately. It's through these small, everyday moments that they learn to manage big feelings.
