Lafayette Karate Club Lafayette Karate Club is the only traditional Japanese Shotokan Karate in town! Member the of Japan Karate Association (JKA), & JKA American Federation.

Our Chief Examiner is Takayuki Mikami Sensei, JKA 9th Dan & Chief Instructor is Rose Shuff (Sandan). Lafayette Karate Club is the only traditional Japanese Shotokan Karate in town. Shotokan training is divided into three parts: kihon (basics), kata (patterns of moves), and kumite (sparring). Techniques in kihon and kata are characterized by deep, long stances that provide stability, enable powerful movements, and strengthen the legs. Shotokan is regarded as a dynamic martial art as it develops anaerobic, powerful techniques as well as developing speed. Mondays & Wednesdays:
Kids: 5:30pm - 6:20pm
Regular: 6:30 - 7:20pm

Karate is more than a physical discipline—it is a lifelong journey of character, discipline, respect, loyalty, effort, and self-control. The true goal of training is not simply to become stronger, faster, or more skilled, but to become a better person both inside and outside the dojo.

The Dojo-Kun reminds every karateka that martial arts begin with the development of character. Seek perfection of character by choosing integrity even when nobody is watching. Be faithful to your principles, your training, your teacher, and those who walk beside you. Always endeavor, because progress is built through consistent effort, patience, and the courage to continue when the journey becomes difficult.

Respect others regardless of rank, experience, background, or ability. In karate, respect is demonstrated through humility, discipline, proper etiquette, and the way we treat others. A true martial artist understands that strength without self-control can become weakness.

The highest level of karate is not measured by how easily we can defeat an opponent, but by how well we can control ourselves. Refrain from violent behavior and use your skills responsibly. Train hard, remain humble, and carry the values of the dojo into everyday life.

These principles, associated with the teachings of Gichin Funakoshi, continue to inspire generations of karate practitioners around the world. Every bow, every technique, every repetition, and every challenge is an opportunity to improve.
