Eighth Grade Community Engagement Week is a wrap!

Students spent their final day volunteering at food pantries across St. Louis, supporting efforts to address food insecurity in our community. After a week of learning, serving and making a difference, students gathered at Tower Grove Park for a picnic and games. A meaningful week of service, teamwork and community spirit, with plenty of fun along the way!

As part of Eighth Grade Community Engagement Week, Burroughs 8th graders visited LifeWise StL, an organization dedicated to helping individuals and families build stronger, more stable futures.

Students rotated through three activities: a poverty simulation that challenged them to navigate the difficult financial decisions many families face, a tour of the organization to learn more about its programs and impact in the St. Louis community, and a hands-on service project packaging and labeling clothing for distribution.

The experience gave students a deeper understanding of the challenges facing members of our community while highlighting the importance of empathy, service and taking action to support others.

Nestled in the Ozarks’ Pioneer Forest, Drey Land is Burroughs’ wilderness camp and an important part of the seventh grade experience. Students step outside the classroom to explore the natural world, build confidence and connect with their classmates. Through outdoor adventures, teamwork and shared experiences, they gain independence, strengthen their sense of community and create lasting memories. Photos by Donald Dodd.

8th Grade Community Engagement Week continues across St. Louis! Today, eighth graders focused on early childhood education, supporting young learners, teachers and classrooms in the Hazelwood, Normandy and Ritenour school districts.

In the afternoon, students explored advocacy with representatives from Keyway Center for Diversion & Reentry and Missouri Appleseed. Through a simulation and discussion, they learned about challenges facing women, children and families and considered how advocacy can be a meaningful form of service.

As part of our inaugural celebration, we recognized faculty members marking milestones ranging from 5 to 49 years of service, with special recognition for those celebrating 25 years at JBS: Maria Cohen (Modern Languages), Jon Bang (History) and Eric Knispel (Science).
