The third and final domain of the PreK - 3rd grade CLASS assessment tool is the Instructional Support Domain. This domain has three dimensions:
- Concept Development
- Quality of Feedback
- Language Modeling

Concept development is getting children to think deeper, encourage creativity, and learn about concepts and content.
- Ask "How" and "Why" that encourages children to predict, classify, evaluate, make comparisons, and problem-solve. Give them time to think and the answers to these "how" and "why" questions and to test their theories.
- Allow children to be creative and generate their own thoughts and ideas through open-ended play. Let them brainstorm, make a plan and produce their own ideas and products.
- Connect new learning to things that children already know in order to deepen the current concept, idea, or experience.
- Relate concepts to children's everyday lives which make learning more meaningful and relevant. This connects the concept itself to the child's actual life and experiences.

Back-and-forth "loops" between the child and educator that builds on children's knowledge/skills to increase the child's understanding or to increase the child's persistence. The educator takes the child at their current level of understanding and provides specific, extended, and individualized feedback to deepen children's understanding and refine the learning.
- In order for a child to progress in a skill or to increase understanding, the educator may provide hints, assistance, or another type of support. Tasks can be made easier or more challenging to support the learning.
- The back-and-forth exchanges between the child and educator is to build on the child's responses, comments, or actions to assist in the learning. The educator is persistent in and asks follow-up questions to engage children in sustained exchanges.
- The educator prompts children through the process of thinking and understanding by asking children to explain their thinking which further deepens children's understanding of their own thought process.
- The educator gives children more information that expands on the child's comment or action which leads to a deeper understanding. This information is specific and focuses on giving an explanation or additional details or clarifies a misunderstanding.
- The educator provides specific motivation and encouragement that is focused on the child's effort and not the outcome. As a result, the child continues to persist even when challenged.

FAMILY FOCUS FRIDAY!!
On Monday, we shared developmental milestones in the areas of movement/physical development and cognitive skills for a 48 month old child. Here are some fun family activities to do with your child to promote those skill areas of development:

Movement/Physical Development -
Play “bucket hoops.” Have your child stand about 6 feet away and throw a medium-size ball at a large bucket or trash can. For fun outdoors on a summer day,
fill the bucket with water.
Go on a walk and pick up things you find. Bring the items home and help your child sort them into groups. For example, groups can include rocks, paper, or leaves. Encourage your child to start a collection of special things. Find a box or special place where he can display the collection.

Cognitive Skills-
Tell your child to use his brain and solve these riddles. “Can you name an animal that gives us something to drink?” (cow) “Can you think of something that flies but doesn’t have wings?” (flag, rocket, kite) “Can you think of something that rolls but doesn’t have wheels?” (ball, orange) If your child can’t think of an answer, give hints until he gets it. Now, ask your child to make up a riddle for you.
Gather together a lot of little things in a small container: paper clips, rubber bands, barrettes, or odds and ends. Talk with your child about ways to group the things together. Sort rubber bands by color, size, or length. Line up five items, and point to each one as you count. Now let your child try.

Button some buttons
Hops on one foot

Cognitive Milestones-
Counts to 10
Names some numbers between 1 and 5 when you point to them
Pays attention for 5-10 mins during activities
Writes some letters in their name
Names some letters of the alphabet when you point to them
