Fun fact: The three storms out there today, Rachel, Simon, and Isaias, are all Biblical names… And when I saw their meanings, it reminded me of a few things we’ve been talking about this past month at Victory MMA Lacombe.

• Rachel means “sheep.”
• Simon means “he has heard.”
• Isaias means “Yahweh is salvation.”

It couldn’t be a more fitting reminder for me because it connects to one of my favorite Bible verses: “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” (John 10:27)

If you’ve ever been to Victory MMA Lacombe, you know one of my favorite reflections is about keeping your eyes on Jesus when you’re in the middle of your storm.

Just like Peter, when he kept his focus on Jesus, he walked on water. But when he saw the wind and the waves, he became afraid and began to sink. (Matthew 14:29–30)

So whether you’re in the middle of a storm/hurricane or likw we talked about yesterday, having a Goliath standing in front of you… stay close to God and don’t take your eyes off Jesus!

Instead, be like Jesus, who slept like a baby through the storm! 😂😂😂 (Mark 4:38)

Sometimes the storms in our lives are what draw us closer to Jesus… so don’t focus on the storm in front of you… instead, lift your eyes to what’s above and remember who your help comes from!

“I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.” (Psalm 121:1–2)

Don’t let what’s happening around you distract you from the One who can carry you through it!

Matthew 3:10 says:
“And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.”

Just like a tree that bears bad fruit has to be cut down at the root…

Kill off the laziness.
Kill off the excuses.
Cut away the weakness.

Get rooted in Christ and let your life produce good fruit.

Sunday Reflection:
Today at Church, Jesus taught the “Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard”

Long parable short, the workers that got hired at the end of the day got paid the same amount as the workers in the beginning of the day.

Now for most, including myself, we tend to focus on how fair that would be… but the workers hired at the end of the day was trying to get work the whole time.

I could only imagine the mental torment that was going on if you had to feed your family and you waited all day and couldn’t be hired. And that seems to be the case for most of us.

Although not necessarily for the day, but thinking of the future can be scary. With the prices of everything being so high, so much is needed, we tend to take our eyes off of God.

But this is when one of my favorite Bible verses comes to play… Psalms 121:1-2 “”I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from where my help comes from. My help comes from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.”

Just like the workers that were in the field all day, I’m sure many of us feel that way right now, scared for the future. Not knowing how our future will go and how will we maintain?

But when you focus on God and you keep trying, just know that God always has you… just like the last workers hired on in the vineyard, God will never leave you nor forsake you…

Colossians 3:2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.

In the locker room after his first loss, Seth sat there visibly down with how the fight had played out.

David realized nothing we were saying was helping, so he asked Jonathan Jackson if he had any words that might lift Seth up.

Jonathan looked at Seth and asked, “Who is your favorite fighter? I’m willing to bet your favorite fighter has tasted defeat.”

My mind immediately went to Josh Weems.

Not just because he’s an exciting fighter or because of his love for God (although that is a big plus 😂😂😂), but because of who he is and his sheer resilience. He’s a true underdog story.

Josh has a family that depends on him, so he doesn’t have the luxury of taking time off work for full training camps. That normally wouldn’t be a problem if he were fighting local or regional fighters, but Josh is stepping in against some of the best up-and-coming fighters from around the world, often on short notice and up a weight class, on some of the biggest stages in combat sports.

Despite the odds, he trusts where God is leading him, puts on the gloves, makes the walk, and thanks God for every opportunity.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to “work” with Josh as he prepares to fight a UFC veteran in the Dominican Republic in three weeks.

Short notice or not, this man has the spirit of a lion.

After training, we talked about God and Jesus, and I asked if he ever regretted the way his career turned out because of all the bold moves he took in his career… and without hesitation, he said no.

He said he is just grateful he got to travel the country doing what he loves and most importantly, allowing him to be there to watch his kids grow and be the family man he is. He chooses to enjoy the journey God has laid before him.

Proverbs 16:9 says:
“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”

We all have a blueprint for our lives. But when we trust the Lord with the journey, the road may look completely different than we expected.

Thankful for brothers like Josh who remind me to trust God with the journey and simply enjoy the walk. 🙏🙏🙏

What does loving our neighbor Biblically really look like? Let’s have a look, shall we?

FUN FACT:
The first four of the Ten Commandments primarily deal with our relationship with God.

The remaining six deal with how we treat our neighbor.

So when I hear Christians being called “unchristian” or accused of “preaching hate” simply because they speak about what the Bible says is right and wrong, I think we need to stop and ask:

What does it actually mean to love our neighbor?
Because according to Scripture, loving our neighbor doesn’t mean agreeing with everything they do.

In fact, we’re told to be “speaking the truth in love.” — Ephesians 4:15

As Christians, we are called to stand firm on God’s truth and love our neighbors.

Sometimes loving someone means loving them enough to tell them the truth, even when that truth is uncomfortable.

I wish Christians would actually just learn to “love thy neighbor.”

So let’s take a deeper look at how God loves us and how that should shape the way we love our neighbors.

“The Lord disciplines the one he loves.” — Proverbs 3:11–12

“Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent.” — Revelation 3:19

God corrects us because He loves us.
Biblical love isn’t always comfortable.

Sometimes love says, “You’re wrong.”
Sometimes love says, “You need to repent.”
Sometimes love says, “This path is leading you away from God.”

So if you’re a believer and someone corrects you according to God’s Word and in love, don’t automatically assume they’re judging you simply because their words make you uncomfortable.

Now, I’m not going to pretend that some Christians can come across as judgmental. We absolutely need to examine ourselves.

But correction should always be rooted in truth, humility, gentleness, and a desire to restore. — Galatians 6:1

Because sometimes the most loving thing someone can do isn’t tell you what you want to hear.

It’s tell you what you need to hear.

SAVED BY THE BLOOD.
That’s what Coach Hayden’s shirt says, but what does it mean?

It takes me to Exodus 12 and the Passover, where God provided a way for His people to be spared through the blood of a lamb.

“When I see the blood, I will pass over you.”
— Exodus 12:13

They weren’t spared because they were perfect. They trusted God’s provision and obeyed His command. And that lamb was pointing to something greater—the Lamb of God.

“Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.”
— 1 Corinthians 5:7

Just as the Israelites trusted God’s provision and were spared through the blood of the Passover lamb, we are called to put our faith in Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, whose blood was shed for the forgiveness of our sins.

We aren’t saved because we’re good enough.
We are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

When the time comes, will the blood of the Lamb be on your doorpost? ✝️

There are some young fathers in my class, so I took the opportunity to talk to them about the Lindsey Clancy case.

I told them I haven’t followed the case closely enough to speak on the details, but I do know postpartum depression is real. Hormones raging, sleepless nights, breastfeeding/pumping, and newborn exhaustion… these moms can be carrying A LOT.

So I reminded the young fathers that as men, we are called to lead our households. And even more so, biblical leadership means serving and sacrificing.
So I told them, if your job permits, take the late-night feeding… get up, put the baby back to sleep, and let your wife rest. Pick up the slack when you can and do what we were called to do… lead by serving.

I used to have the “not my shift, not my problem” mentality. 😂 I’d sleep through the baby crying while my wife was exhausted… then when she would say she was tired in the morning, I’d be thinking, I had the same amount of sleep!

So being the great husband that I am, I thought I’d be nice and make it a point to get up… thinking she was being just a tad dramatic. 😅😅😅

I quickly realized my poor wife was NOT exaggerating. 😂😂

And this isn’t just for husbands—it goes for wives too. We are in a spiritual battle, so be careful who you listen to. Not every voice speaking into our lives is from God.
We all know social media doesn’t show the whole picture. Podcasts telling us how to “live our best life” usually promote living for ourselves… and we need to be careful about whose advice we allow to shape how we see marriage and fatherhood.

Even our own thoughts can influence how we see marriage, parenthood, and what it means to sacrifice for our family.

Live by God’s truth, not the world’s.

Just remember that we are called to love our wives as Christ loved the church. And that’s a sacrificial love.

“Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” — Ephesians 5:25

So love your wife. Serve your family. Pick up the slack… and like my friend Topher told me…
