Dear Lackawanna Community,
The safety and well-being of our students is always a top priority. That includes safety outside of the classroom during the summer months. Whether enjoying a day at the beach, spending time by a pool, boating with family or participating in other water-related activities, understanding how to stay safe in and around the water can help prevent accidents and save lives.
One way Lackawanna City School District helps students develop this critical life skill is through its comprehensive swim program, which is offered to students in grades 2-12 as part of their physical education curriculum.
The program is designed to help students develop essential swimming skills, build confidence in the water and learn safety practices that can reduce the risk of drowning. We are proud to offer this opportunity and believe it is an important part of preparing students for a lifetime of safe recreation and healthy living.
While swimming lessons provide valuable skills, they are only one part of staying safe around water. Families are encouraged to reinforce water safety habits at home, including closely supervising children near water, swimming with a buddy, wearing life jackets when boating and choosing supervised swimming areas whenever possible.
Drowning can happen quickly and quietly, making awareness and preparation especially important. By working together as families, educators and community members, we can help ensure everyone enjoys water activities safely.
Additional water safety resources and information are available on our website through the New York State Department of Health's Swim Safe initiative.
Thank you for your partnership in keeping our students and community safe.
Sincerely,
Nadia Nashir, Superintendent of Schools
