Dr. Prashant Joshi, Associate Professor of Finance, recently published an article on his blog, "Finance, Decoded," examining the limitations of the traditional “bell curve” assumption in stock market analysis. Drawing on S&P 500 daily return data, Dr. Joshi demonstrates that financial markets exhibit fat tails, negative skewness, and volatility clustering, meaning that extreme market gains and losses occur much more frequently than standard risk models predict. While the normal distribution may adequately describe average trading days, it significantly understates the probability and impact of major market events, particularly severe downturns. His analysis finds that alternative models, such as the Student’s t-distribution and Generalized Error Distribution (GED), provide a more realistic representation of market behavior by accounting for heavier tails. The article further highlights how reliance on normal-distribution assumptions can lead investors to underestimate drawdown risk, take on excessive leverage, and be unprepared for market crises such as the 2020 COVID-19 downturn. Dr. Joshi concludes by encouraging investors to adopt a more robust, tail-aware approach to risk management through the use of measures such as Expected Shortfall (ES), rigorous stress testing, prudent position sizing, and adequate liquidity reserves to better withstand rare but consequential market shocks. Each semester, Saint Martin’s University undergraduate business students participate in a highly competitive worldwide business strategy simulation that challenges them to apply knowledge of strategic management, leadership, finance, marketing, and operations in a dynamic global marketplace. During the 2025–2026 academic year, the Business Strategy Game (Glo-Bus) included more than 3,200 teams representing 421 campuses across 30 countries, with over 38,500 students participating worldwide. Teams were evaluated based on four major performance measures: Overall Score, Earnings Per Share, Return on Average Equity, and Stock Price.
During the Spring 2026 semester, the BA 499 student team — consisting of Ryan Doidge, Lolmei Uong, and Jane Lee — earned exceptional international recognition by achieving a Global Top 100 ranking in multiple categories at the conclusion of the business simulation competition. Through outstanding strategic decision-making, teamwork, and business leadership, the team ranked 41st worldwide in Earnings Per Share (EPS) performance and 48th worldwide in Stock Price performance.
These remarkable accomplishments demonstrate the talent, dedication, analytical capability, and competitive excellence of Saint Martin’s University business students as they successfully compete against teams from leading business schools around the world.

Saint Martin’s University celebrated its 2026 Commencement Ceremony on May 9, honoring graduates who earned doctoral, master’s, and bachelor’s degrees from the College of Business, Engineering, and Technology (CBET), the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education (CASE), and the School of Health and Allied Health (SHAH). The ceremony marked an important milestone for students, families, faculty, and staff as the university community gathered to recognize the academic accomplishments, perseverance, and future aspirations of the graduating class.
A special highlight of the commencement ceremony was the conferral of the honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, upon Bishop Michael F. Olson, S.T.D., bishop of the Diocese of Fort Worth, Texas. The honorary degree recognizes individuals who have demonstrated distinguished achievements, exceptional leadership, and meaningful service to society. By awarding this honor, Saint Martin’s University acknowledged Bishop Olson’s significant contributions to faith, education, leadership, and community service.

Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering candidate Mr. Abdul Wahab presented his thesis, “Influence of Crack Geometry on the Fracture Behavior of Composite Single-Edge Notched Specimens under Three-Point Bending: A Finite Element Analysis,” on May 4 under the supervision of Mechanical Engineering faculty Dr. Shahlaa Al Wakeel. His research examined how different crack geometries affect the fracture behavior of composite materials commonly used in aerospace, automotive, and structural engineering applications due to their high strength-to-weight ratio. Using finite element modeling in ANSYS within the framework of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM) and following ASTM E399 standards, the study analyzed stress distribution and crack-tip behavior in composite Single Edge Notch Bend (SENB) specimens subjected to three-point bending. The findings demonstrated that crack geometry plays a critical role in fracture response by influencing stress concentration, distribution, crack initiation, and propagation, providing valuable insights for improving the design, reliability, and performance of composite structures under bending loads.
