💛 September is Deaf Awareness Month 💛

To the parent who just heard the words “Your child has hearing loss” — I see you.

This month isn’t only about awareness. It’s about celebrating Deaf culture, identity, and community, and showing you what’s POSSIBLE!

Traditionally, deaf has been used to describe someone with a significant level of hearing loss, while Deaf refers to those who identify with and participate in Deaf culture, using ASL as their primary language.

I identify as deaf or hard of hearing. I’m also a teacher, military spouse, and someone who grew up in a mainstream classroom all throughout my childhood to college. I made sure I got the services I needed to be successful. This is why I am so passionate about my hearing disability. I don’t see my disability as a burden, I see it as a blessing to help others, to encourage others that they are not alone!

Here’s what I want you to hear:

👉 Your child can thrive.
Deafness can be seen as a diagnosis, an identity, or simply one attribute of who they are. Your perspective will be shaped by your own experiences (or lack of them). But no matter what, know this: you are the perfect parent for your child.

Deaf Awareness Month is about shifting the story.
It’s not about fixing or fear — it’s about connection, adaptation, and finding your people. I’m one of them.

You are not alone on this journey. And I’m so glad you’re here.
