Celebrating 250 Years of American History right here in La Verne!

As part of La Verne’s celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, we’re highlighting the people, places and stories that helped shape the community we know today.

This month, we’re taking a closer look at one of the most recognizable features of the La Verne Library. Its handcrafted oak tree doors! 🌳📚

When the current La Verne Library opened on D Street in 1985, local artist and woodworker Ruben Guajardo began creating a one-of-a-kind entrance using wood salvaged from a historic oak tree that once stood at La Verne Heights Elementary School.

The tree was estimated to be nearly 500 years old when it was removed after becoming a safety hazard. For Guajardo, the project also had a personal connection, he had climbed the very same oak tree as a child growing up in the La Verne area.

Guajardo spent more than 950 hours over approximately three years transforming the salvaged wood into the intricate oak tree design that continues to welcome visitors today.

More than two decades later, Guajardo returned to the library and created a carved wooden light fixture to complement the doors, further adding to this unique piece of local history.

The next time you visit the La Verne Library, take a moment to look at the entrance a little closer as you’re looking at a piece of La Verne history that is centuries in the making!

🗑️ Surprise! We’re talking trash every Thursday in September!

Join us at La Verne City Hall for Talk Trash Thursdays, where WM representatives will be available to answer questions about the billing transition, help residents set up their My WM accounts, and provide one-on-one assistance. WM representatives will be at City Hall every Thursday from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM.

No need to pop out of a trash can, just stop by City Hall and let’s talk trash!

That's a wrap on the August 3 City Council meeting!

Fire Marshal Fred St. Ange presented the City’s recognition on the 2026 Fire Risk Reduction Community List. La Verne was added to the California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection’s list in recognition of the City’s continued efforts to strengthen wildfire preparedness, reduce local fire risk, and protect residents, property, and critical infrastructure. Through this program, residents can receive discounts on their homeowner's insurance. Learn more at LaVerneCA.gov/Fire

During a study session, representatives from the Los Angeles County Fire Department and Agricultural Commissioner/Weights and Measures provided an update on the Goldspotted Oak Borer infestation and its impacts on La Verne. The invasive beetle threatens local oak trees and may increase wildfire risk as affected trees decline and die. Learn more at LaVerneCA.gov/GSOB

We were pleased to have U.S. Marine Corps Lance Corporal Veteran Richard Munoz lead the pledge of allegiance.

Kuns Park Playground Reopens Tomorrow!

The newly renovated Kuns Park playground will officially reopen on Thursday, August 6, at 11:00 a.m. Swing by and enjoy the new play equipment designed for children ages 2 to 12!

After more than 30 years of use, the former playground has been replaced with a new ADA-compliant play area featuring a rubberized surface and shade structure to create a safer, more accessible, and comfortable space for families.

The City thanks the Los Angeles County Regional Park and Open Space District for funding this exciting improvement through Measure A funds. We look forward to welcoming the community back to Kuns Park!

The nomination period for the November 3, 2026, Municipal Election closes Friday, August 7. City Council Districts 1, 3, and 4 are up for election.

Prospective candidates must complete and submit all required nomination documents to the City Clerk’s Office before the deadline. Learn more at LaVerneCA.gov/Election.

Residents interested in running for City Council may obtain nomination papers through the City Clerk’s Office during the official nomination period. There’s still time to show us La Verne through your lens! The deadline to enter the City’s America 250 Photo Contest has been extended to Thursday, August 13, at 5:00 PM.

Explore the community, capture what makes La Verne special, and submit your photos in one of four categories:

The contest is free and open to La Verne residents of all ages. Participants may submit up to three photos, with no more than one entry per category.

Photos must be taken within La Verne city limits, and AI-generated images are not permitted.

Celebrating 250 Years of American History right here in La Verne!

As part of La Verne’s celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, we’re highlighting the people, places and stories that helped shape the community we know today.

This month, we’re featuring the La Verne United Methodist Church, a local landmark with roots that predate the founding, and even the name, of City of La Verne (formerly called Lordsburg).

In 1887, a small group of Methodists began meeting in the Pioneer Building, a hotel located along Arrow Highway. Just four months later, a land auction was held to establish the new community of Lordsburg. By the early 1890s, the congregation had built a wooden church at Third and F streets.

As the community grew, so did the church. In 1911, the building was remodeled to accommodate up to 600 people. Following the population boom after World War II, orange rancher W. Scott Romick and his wife generously contributed property along D Street, allowing the church to relocate to its present-day site across from Bonita High School.

The property also includes a barn constructed in the early 1900s, which has served for generations as a Boy Scout troop meeting house.

Beyond its nearly 140-year history and important role in La Verne’s development, the church is also recognizable from the iconic wedding scene in a cult-classic film. Let us know in the comments if you know which movie the La Verne United Methodist Church is featured in!
