Learning English at Faith PCA

Learning English at Faith PCA We have provided free English classes for adult learners in the Cumberland, Maryland area since 2009. Couples can share one book if they are in the same class.

Faith Presbyterian Church provides these classes as a service to the community. The classes are free, and there is a recommended textbook available for purchase. Since 2009 we have had students from over 30 countries. Not only will you learn English, but you will also make new friends from this country as well as from all the countries represented by our students. The Fall semester begins the seco

nd Monday of September, and the Spring semester begins the first Monday of February. Students can come any Monday night that classes are in session and register and join a class immediately. Students are interviewed the first night and placed in the most appropriate class level. For those who find it hard to believe that we have served friends from 36 countries, here is the official list. We are amazed and honored that we have been able to work with so many wonderful people. We had another great Traditional American Thanksgiving dinner at ESL. Counting staff and students and family members we fed a total of about 70 people that night. In the Spring we will have our annual International Dinner and students will be invited to bring foods from their home countries.

Our ESL program will start back up on September 8 after a summer break. Student can show up any Monday night after that and join a class. We usually have 3 levels, sometimes 4.
Also, anyone interested in ESL is welcome to join us tonight (Aug 11) at Livy"s for ice cream and conversation about ESL.

Being part of an ESL program, it is always nice to find helpful hints on how to use English properly. I found on my Miriam Webster iPhone app an easy way to remember when I comes before e and vice versa. You will never get them mixed up again using this easy cheat sheet...
I before e, except after c
Or when sounded as 'a' as in 'neighbor' and 'weigh'
Unless the 'c' is part of a 'sh' sound as in 'glacier'
Or it appears in comparatives and superlatives like 'fancier'
And also except when the vowels are sounded as 'e' as in 'seize'
Or 'i' as in 'height'
Or also in '-ing' inflections ending in '-e' as in 'cueing'
Or in compound words as in 'albeit'
Or occasionally in technical words with strong etymological links to their parent languages as in 'cuneiform'
Or in other numerous and random exceptions such as 'science', 'forfeit', and 'weird'.

Isn't that an easy way to keep them straight. It couldn't be any easeir.

In two weeks, Sept 9, we will start our 15th year providing free English classes at Faith Presbyterian Church (PCA). We have enjoyed helping people from 38 countries. The only remaining continents not represented among our students are Australia (English speaking) and ...Antartica. No response from the penguins as of yet, but we are open to the possibilities.
