Imagine living in two worlds, one in India and the other on the moors in northern England. The secret garden playing at New Village Arts in downtown Carlsbad is an amazing musical not to be missed, especially if you are someone who has read the book. The play, beautifully directed by Rosina Reynolds, begins in 1906 with Mary Lennox, a 10 year old girl whose parents died in the cholera epidemic in India. She goes to live in her uncle’s house called Misselthwaite Manor in England. The house is creepy. Mary has no friends. She is contrary and mad! After living there awhile, Mary meets her cousin Colin who is also 10 and is locked away in a little room in the manor. His dad is Mary‘s uncle. His name is Archibald Craven. He keeps Colin isolated because he doesn’t want to love him. He blames Colin for his wife’s death. As children love to explore their environs, Mary discovers a garden. She keeps it a secret and tells only Colin about it. Every day, she wheels him out into it. Before long, he gets better and begins to walk. Later, Colin’s dad is in the garden with his brother who is Colin’s doctor. Suddenly, the door opens and in walks Colin! Archie Craven and his brother are shocked to see Colin walking because they both believed he was going to die, but Colin’s dad instead was overjoyed. Finally, Mary and Colin got to be normal children who stayed together forever.
In its production of The Secret Garden, New Village Arts boasts an amazing cast of characters: Mary Lennox played by 7th grader Sara Mahaffey, her two uncles played by David S. Humphrey and Manny Fernandez, Kevane La’marr Coleman as Albert Lennox and Dreamer, and Jacob Farry as Colin. There are so many more amazing actors in this play; just go see it for yourselves and you will understand what I am talking about. Thank you, Kristianne Kurner, for producing this wonderful musical. Runs through December 24 - written by Anna Spengler Grade 5 with coaching from Dr. Lynne
