Today, our community gathered to honor the memory of LJCDS lifer Deora Bodley ’99, one of the courageous passengers aboard United Flight 93 on September 11, 2001.

On the 25th anniversary, we came together to reflect on Deora’s life and legacy and honor all those who lost their lives that day. During the morning flag-raising ceremony, Elle A. ’27 read “The Names” by Billy Collins, the Madrigals performed “Just One Person,” Stephanie Sherman ’99 shared a few words, and those who knew Deora joined together to raise the Flight 93 memorial flag, gifted to LJCDS by Deora’s mother. The Middle School band followed with a performance of “America the Beautiful.”

The afternoon continued with an assembly that brought together current and former LJCDS educators, alumni and members of the school community to share memories and reflections.

Twenty-five years later, we carry these stories and memories with us, honoring the lives, legacies and lasting impact of those we remember.

From four students in a one-room cottage to a 24-acre campus serving more than 1,100 students, LJCDS might look very different 100 years later, but our sense of community remains at the heart of the school.

With support from the Susan Nordenger Endowed Fund, students turned an idea into a community-powered project that helps others feel at home.

The ceramics studio was buzzing as students of all ages, parents, and teachers gathered for the second Project Home glazing event. Tables overflowed with handmade bowls, mugs, and plates awaiting their final touch as Ariela and Talia watched months of planning, collaboration, and creativity come to life.

When Cory Thompson ’26 began looking at new schools, he had two goals: to continue competing in athletics and stay involved in music. At many schools, that would have meant choosing one or the other.

At La Jolla Country Day School, he didn’t have to choose.

Read more about how Cory found a place where teachers and coaches worked together to make both possible.

A senior shares how he balances athletics and the arts at LJCDS.
